TV channels unable to buy major Bollywood hits, recession being blamed
The global recession is taking its toll on everything and the latest to be hit by it is the TV stations that are unable to pump up large amounts for premiere rights of big Bollywood blockbusters.
A price of a film will start from Rs 3 crore and go up to a massive Rs 15 crore. Last year’s big hits Welcome and Om Shanti Om were sold to TV channels for around Rs 15 crore whereas Jab We Met went for half that amount. But now paying that much for a movie is not feasible at all. Says Sameer Rao, Business Head, Star Gold, “We have been strategically buying library titles and new titles because the prices of new titles do not justify the returns.”
Imran Khan starrer Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na was the last film to be sold at Rs 15 crore. Now even colossal hits such as Singh Is Kinng have failed to attract any buyers. This Akshay Kumar mega-hit has been given for free to Colors by Studio 18; both these companies belong to the same group.
