Movie Review: Meerabai Not Out
Film Critic: Goher Iqbal Punn
Producer: Pritsih Nandy Communications
Director: Chandrakant Kulkarni
Cast: Mandira Bedi, Ejaaz Khan and Mahesh Manjerakar
The sex pot, the popular TV host Mandira Bedi re-joins the big screen once again with ‘Meerabai Not Out’. She has been giving huge hype since the outset to make her comeback lucrative. But all went waste since she could not entice the viewers as she delivered mundane performance and appeared as a fully clad gal on the screen (the sex goddess was being expected to show something on the celluloid but she disappointed her fans who love to see her in sexy outfits). The script is a big letdown as it carries full of flaws story. Besides, what had happened to the director when he cast Mandira opposite the guy who looks much younger than her? The film is about a cricket enthusiast who goes to extremes. She even on the day of her engagement goes to watch the cricket match. Director Chandrakant Kulkarni appeared weak with the direction on the screen.
Mandira Bedi got much popularity due to the game of cricket and this is the game which is widely watched in India, nonetheless the film and Mandira could not generate the oomph factor amongst the audiences. The TV actor Ejaaz Khan makes his long awaited film debut with this movie.
Meera Achrekar (Mandira Bedi) can’t think beyond cricket and is a huge fan of Anil Kumble. She is a teacher of mathematics in a Hindi medium school. She plays this cricket crazy woman, leading a mundane life which includes- holding protest marches, picking up fights with people selling cricket match tickets in black. She also leads a team called Meera XI in her society. She is a crazy fan of cricket since the game is in her blood. Her life starts and ends with this game. She sleeps, eats and drinks cricket. Her utter motto of life is to cheer up her hero Anil Kumble.
The beginning of finding a groom for her emerges. He brother Manoj (Mahesh Manjerekar) visits the matrimonial instituitions. Her mother matches the horoscopes but Meera simply tries to run from the reality. But one fine day, the lady bumps into a doctor and love blossoms.
The direction is below average. The cinematography is okay. Dialogues are not great. As told earlier, the script is a big letdown. Mandira Bedi delivers nothing special. Ejaaz Khan fails to register impacts. Mahesh Manjeraker is the only saving grace who enacts well. Anupam Kher is average.
On the whole, ‘Meerabai Not Out’ would certainly be OUT from the theaters soon.
