Movie Review: Maharathi
Film Critic: Goher Iqbal Punn
Producer: Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision Ltd.
Director: Shivam Nair
Cast: Naseeruddin Shah, Paresh Rawal, Boman Irani and Neha Dhupia
When a flick is packed with the veterans like Naseeruddin Shah, Paresh Rawal and Boman Irani, you become certain that there is a no waste of money. But after watching ‘Maharathi’, you get disappointed utterly since neither there is any mind blowing acting by these veterans nor there is any catching storyline that can get you glued to your seats. A good script is a pillar of any film to make it a hit but when the narrative is weak, it is clear that the movie will see the disastrous result at the box office. The same will happen with ‘Maharathi’, it will see failure at the box office.
Shivam Nair has directed this enterprise, which begins with an interesting manner but soon the loopholes become very evident. Subhash Sharma (Paresh Rawal), a struggling actor rescues Jai Singh Adenwala (Naseeruddin Shah) from a car accident and in return he is offered the job of his driver. On his personal life front, Jai Singh is in shreds as he shares an estranged relationship with his much younger sexy wife Mallika (Neha Dhupia). Adenwala’s hatred for his wife is such that he kills himself and challenges the claimant (his wife Mallika) to prove his suicide a murder to claim the insurance amount.
Mallika involves Subhash in this game to show the suicide as murder and mutually share the insurance money. And now the two fasten the belts to attempt to kill the man, who has already committed suicide. The saga gets complicated.
The script is very poor. The viewer starts thinking as to why Naseeruddin Shah committed suicide as there was no valid reason to that. If he wanted to teach his wife a lesson then he should have killed her instead of himself. Shivam Nair has done wonderful job on direction’s front. The dialogues hold values. The cinematography is first rate.
Amongst the veterans, Paresh Rawal is somewhat better. The others like Naseer and Boman do not entice at all. Neha Dhupia is okay. Rest of the cast is just about average.
On the whole, ‘Maharathi’ has no sparks even is laced with the veteran actors.
RS Rating: 1.5/5
