Kukunoor’s last film Dor was praised universally as a finely crafted film but did not move the box office to the extent his previous film Iqbal did. The hiring of John Abraham for Aashayein and a plot that is atleast vaguely Bollywood, brings Kukunoor back to his style in Iqbal, which was loved by critics and the junta.
“My stories always deal with real people. In life we have many layers to our character: you’re a reporter and I’m a filmmaker. What background is given to my characters is very important to me for I believe in making films on characters who viewers can relate to.”
Dor was the story of two women, who face their loss together and starred Shreyas Talpade along with Ayesha Takia and Gul Penag. The film’s name Aashayein comes from the hit song of Kukunoor’s film Iqbal.
