Movie Review: Dostana
Film Critic: Goher Iqbal Punn

Producer: Dharma Production (Karan Johar)
Director: Tarun Munsukhani
Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham, Priyanka Chopra and Bobby Deol

Dharma Productions’ much talked about and well in news flick, ‘Dostana’ hits the screens today. Directed by Tarun Munsukhani, the film features Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham, Priyanka Chopra and Bobby Deol in the main roles. This Karan Johar production has everything to make it an unforgettable movie. It has comedy, style, great performances and the much required ‘oomph’ factor. The debutante director surely makes it different and distinctive from the routine Karan Johar films. When you watch it, you don’t have the feeling of a KJ movie. And this is certainly a point to make it impressive since the moviegoers become bored watching the same touch and style time and time again. Tarun cooks up a potage that is much hot, spicy and extremely sumptuous. The script is laced with an innovative subject, which is novel to Bollywood cinema and that is what drags the audiences to the theaters. The flick that boasts of gays, tenant troubles and societal pressures takes an interesting look at a major reality of today where people are forced to change (at least pretend to) their sexual preferences to get things right for themselves. The movie carries forward the much loved Kanta Ben legacy from ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’ reaching a whole new epitome of comic excellence.

The flick is set in Miami where Sameer (Abhishek Bachchan) and Kunal (John Abraham) are turned down for an apartment because the landlady (Sushmita Mukherjee) does not want the two brawny young guys to corrupt her young very sexy niece Neha (Priyanka Chopra). To get the apartment, they scheme a plan and pretend to be gay. Neha then aggress to share the apartment with the two since she takes them to be gay and not a threat to her. All ends up with a strapping friendship among the trio of Sameer, Kunal and Neha. But…Wait…this friendship turns into love as both Sameer and Kunal fall in love with Neha. While the both struggle to get the love, a third man, Abhimanyu (Bobby Deol) enters into the scene. The rivalry develops and intensified leading to an interesting climax.

Director Tarun Munsukhani deserves full marks to bring this innovative subject to Indian screen. The script written by him as well is novel and holds values. The cinematography by Ayananka Bose is crispy. The locales of Miami catch the breath. The music scored by Vishal-Shekar is soothing.

Abhishek Bachchan is superb. John Abraham is great to watch. Bobby Deol as Priyanka’s love is fantastic. Priyanka Chopra is one actress who is riding high on the success ladder day by day. She ceases the breath flow with her acting in this film. Kirron Kher plays a classy role. Sushmita Mukherjee looks apt. Boman Irani as a gay fashion magazine’s editor appeals. The rest of the cast enacts the characters well too.

A Not to Miss Film…..go and watch it.

RS Rating: 4/5
