Sanjay Suri is sporting an all-new look these days. But that’s not for any sort of reinvention. The appearance, he says, is for Onir’s just released and flopped film Bas Ek Pal
“I am not one of those fashion-conscious actors. This look was needed and Onir was insisting as well. I am sporting a goatee and cropped hair,” he says. Suri says that unlike Onir’s last film, My Brother Nikhil, which had a bent towards the abstract, Bas Ek Pal was completely a popular cinema.
“It was an interesting subject and with a cast like Urmila (Matondkar), Jimmy (Shergill) and Juhi Chawla, it has become all the more commercial. Suri, incidentally, has also doing Harry Baweja’s Speed sees him team up with Urmila, besides Zayed Khan and Aftab Shivdasani. So, what is this new-found friendship with Urmila? “Oh, she is a terrific performer. She is quite a talented actress and an interesting person to talk to – always,” he adds.
We asked him why he has not been getting big banner movies, like Jimmy Shergill, and he counters, “I have had my share of good films. Agreed that big banners assure a good package but the directors I am working with aren’t bad any way – they have given me wonderful roles, be it Onir or Sujoy Ghosh (Jhankaar Beats). That’s what counts ultimately.”
