Karan Johar pays out mega money to get Dostana released on time
Karan Johar has had to fork out over Rs 3 crore in an out-of-court settlement with rival production company PNC.
An industry source reveals, "Tarun Mansukhani had fallout with Karan a few years ago, and he approached PNC to do a film with them. He signed a contract and even recorded two songs with Vishal-Shekhar for the film. For some reason, the film didn’t take off. Meanwhile, Tarun and Karan buried their differences and he really liked one of the tracks — Kuch Kum — he worked on for the previous film, and used the same for his official directorial debut — Dostana." A few days before Dostana was to release, PNC sent a legal notice to Karan’s company Dharma Productions suing him for using a song that belonged to them. Says another source, “PNC were threatening to stop the film’s release hence Karan had no choice but to pay them some money so that the film could open as normal.”
When Karan was approached about this, he said, “The matter is between PNC and Vishal-Shekhar. But as of now the way things stand, we at Dharma Productions completely own the song."
