The Canadian nomination for the Oscars and one among the five nominations selected for the best foreign film category is a film based on India and suppressed by India. ‘Water’ will finally make it to the Indian theatres on the 9th of March. Ravi Chopra has taken the task of releasing ‘Water’ in India and hopefully it will be successfully shown in theatres on 9th of March.
‘Water’ was made twice by Deepa Mehta. First time when she had started shooting with Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das in Varanasi, the sets were ransacked because some of the religious group thought the movie had elements against Hindu Culture. Mehta had to scrap the idea of making the film. Five years later she went ahead to shoot the film in Srilanka with Seema Biswas and Liza Ray and named it ‘River Moon’ till the shooting was over.
And now as Mehta counts the days left for the Oscars she is eager for the movie to release in India. “The film has been seen all over the world, and India will be the last country to see it. I am thrilled” says the proud director.
