Rishi Kapoor still oozes the same charm that he used so effectively to woo cineastes in the 80s. He might have put on some weight, he might intermittently keep changing his looks, and he might appear jaded at times, but his performances still pack in a punch – Pyaar Mein Twist and Fanaa were perfect instances.
In an interview, Kapoor talks on a wide range of subjects – his passion for acting, daughter’s marriage and of course his directorial plans.
Okay, so Pyaar Mein Twist didn’t work. But people simply couldn’t get enough of you…
I am so glad that people think of me as an actor even now (laughs). I thought Pyaar Mein Twist was a wonderfully cute movie. I got various reactions after the movie – some adverse and some positive. So, I will be keeping the suggestions for my next films… But remember Fanaa did very well. I couldn’t say no to Yashji and it was good that the film did well.
What’s next?
I am finishing an English film called Don’t Stop Dreaming. Some more good offers are pouring in, but I want to do selective work.
Are you ready to experiment?
Of course, since I have nothing to lose now (laughs). Our phase is over. I am doing acting all over again because it still remains a passion. As my father said, “the show must go on.”
We hear you are losing weight. For a role or something?
One has to keep in shape. It is essentially out of necessity that I have begun attending my gym on time (laughs). I am old now and I need to remain fit.
Are you thinking of direction again?
A lot people ask me. Even I feel like Aa Ab Laut Chalein was ages ago. But I should get excited if I get a script. Direction is not happening in the near future – but yes, if I get my story, I will make a film again.
On son Ranbir, who’s making his debut in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Sawariya
“Ranbir had this desire to be an actor. And when he told me about it, I was the happiest. Ours has been a family which has promoted the show business. So, Ranbir getting into acting was a proud affair. Sanjay is a brilliant director and I have handed over my son to him – mould him the way you want to, Sanjay.”
On daughter Riddhima, who got married a while ago
She married the person she loved. So, as parents, Neetu and I couldn’t have asked for more. I feel blessed that my children have charted their own lives – Riddhima is at her place now, but we miss her always.

WHERE ARE THE SHOWMAN’S FILMS IN NEW CENTURY?
TIME HAS CHANGED, BUT I AM SURE RAJ KAPOOR’S BANNER WILL ONCE AGAIN ENTERTAIN THE WORLD IN A SHOWMAN’S WAY.
