In what was a competitive week at the UK Box Office, with new release Quantum Of Solace and biggies High School Musical 3 and Mamma Mia still performing to house-full, Bollywood’s Golmaal Returns shone out like a bright star.
The Ajay Devgan and Kareena Kapoor starrer was not expected to perform at all but it did just that; the best movie of the week bar Quantum Of Solace and High School Musical 3. This sequel managed a per screen average of £4,591, the third best of the week. Compare that with a record breaking £28,489 by Quantum Of Solace and High School Musical 3’s £5,786, and you are indeed mesmerised.
Even though the film has been critically panned by reviewers, its show at the UK Box Office has to be admired. It was the second highest new entry of the week, at number 7, with of course the James Bond film being the first. Golmaal Returns total collections from the 42 screens it was shown on came to £192,842.
The week’s other Bollywood release, Madhur Bhandarkar’s critically appraised, Fashion was not quite fortunate as Golmaal Returns. Showing on a meagre 14 screens, this Priyanka Chopra catwalk drama managed only £20,984; entering the chart at number 22.
