Movie Review: EMI
Film Critic: Goher Iqbal Punn
Producer: Balaji Telefilms and Popcorn Motion Pictures
Director: Saurbh Kabra
Cast: Sanjay Dutt, Urmila Mantondkar, Arjun Rampal, Aashish Choudhary and Neha Oberoi
Balaji Motion Pictures and Popcorn Motion Pictures’ EMI is finally out. Directed by Saurabh Kadra, the movie stars Sanjay Dutt, Urmila Mantondkar, Arjun Rampal, Aashish Choudhary and Neha Oberoi in the lead. The film talks about the loans, people avail in today’s time and how they get caught in its net! The debutante director reveals the incidents from real life on screen and also depicts the pros and cons of the loans. Four different stories run parallel in this flick but the main protagonist is the one on whom the movie is mainly based on and that is Sanjay Dutt, a bhai log, who recovers loans from the defaulters and also sort outs their personal problems. The film seems brilliant from its title and the promos but sadly it falters a lot. The beginning is great but the movie soon turns out to be a masala product. The film looks absurd when the recovery man fastens the belts to solve the defaulters’ problems and also falls in love with one of the gorgeous defaulters, Prerna (Urmila Mantondkar). The script becomes fully masala. Sanjay Dutt is the only saving grace for the film, who plays Sattar (Bhai) with aplomb.
The movie starts off brilliantly and from midway to end, it loses impact. Sattar (Sanjay Dutt) is the owner of Good Luck Recovery Agency. He is the saviour and the solution for all those who get caught in the debt trap. He likes to do business, politics, social work, all at the same time. From business, he now wants politics in life. Today his company is renowned and all the banks, telecom companies and multinationals want him for the recoveries. His rule is simple … ‘Loan Liya Hai to Chukana Padega’.
In today’s world, if you need a house, want a car, like to travel abroad… you just take a easy loan. All financial institutions paint pictures before you and make everything happen for you and then you get caught in their net. EMI depicts the real life stories for you on the celluloid. It looks interesting but in actual when the film goes on, it falls flat because it jumps from facts to fiction. Only Sanjay Dutt entices you with his acting otherwise the writing portion is a complete letdown.
Saurabh Kabra, the director, looks great with the subject but it’s the writing that does not complement his subject. The music is passable. Dialogues are well penned.
Sany Dutt is superb and registers his class. Arjun, Neha, Aashish are okay. Malaika Arora appears gorgeous. Urmila is wonderful. The rest of the cast is mundane.
In a nutshell, EMI can only be viewed for Sanjay Dutt otherwise it has nothing special to offer.
