Movie Review: Golmaal Returns
Film Critic: Goher Iqbal Punn

Producers: Shree Ashtavinakay Ltd.
Director: Rohit Shetty
Cast: Ajay Devgan, Kareena Kapoor, Shreyas Talpade, Celina Jaitely, Amrita Arora, Tusshar Kapoor and Anja na Sukhani

Director Rohit Shetty and the producers Shree Ashtavinayak’s ‘Golmaal’ two years back hit the hearts and emerged as a true blockbuster at the box office that the director and the producers decided to make a sequel on…! So the sequel is now out in cinemas. Thus the question whether it should have made or not? The answer is very simple (after you come out of the theater), ‘Golmaal Returns’ should not have churned out at all since it’s a big disappointment in every sense of the word. A waste of money and time..! The heavy publicity, the big hype could not generate values for the film. The movie carries forward very little from its original script. And it’s not just the script that is lost somewhere between these years; the very characterization of the four key oddballs has gone for a toss. The result: the much-loved bumpkins are seen struggling throughout the show.

The script is the big letdown of the movie. The entire plot is hackneyed and has nothing novel in store for the audiences. Even the performances are so bad that they too display the viewers that they are not taking the characters seriously.

‘Golmaal Returns’ talks about an irritated but loving husband Gopal (Devgan) who is bumped up by his wife Ekta’s (kareena) eccentricities. According to Ekta, her husband is that hunk with whom every gal in the entire world likes to bed with. Her annoying obsession for her husband is further aggravated by her love for tele-queen Ekta kapoor’s vamp packed ‘K’ soaps. Gopal’s sister Esha (Amrita) and the dumb brother in law Lucky (Tusshar) join them. They both live under the same roof with them. The story gets momentum and picks up pace when one ravishing night, Gopal spends a night with a vivaciously sexy woman Mira Nair (Celina Jaitely) on a yacht due to some unforeseen circumstances. To avoid from her suspicious wife and her fighting, he makes a drama by saying to her that he was with his good friend Anthony Gonsalves. But just like any other lie, this one too gives birth to another and soon involves Laxman (Shreyas), who is Gopal’s junior colleague. A twist in tale happens and the things take a nasty turn and then turn ugly when a corpse of Gopal’s office employee is found. Enters Madhav (Ashad Warsi), the investigating officer. The messy chaos takes place, where everyone is busy hiding something and ending up lying to one another.

Shetty’s direction is poor, as the script of the film is…! The hilarious sequences do not raise the spirits at all. The fun-filled situations and dialogues even seem mundane.

The performances fall flat also. Only Tusshar and Shreyas stand tall amongst the others. The likes of Ajay Devgan too appears with weak performance. Amrita Arora, Arshad Warsi and Anjana Sukhani all display feeble acts. The music holds values, as the songs have become popular among the music lovers.

On the whole, ‘Golmaal Returns’ was not a good idea to make it happen. It should not have been churned out since the script, the performances and the direction all fall flat.
