Is Aishwarya Rai Bachchan a bad actress?
Published by  Webmaster  at 12:10:30 am on October 21, 2008

Not everyone sings praises of the World’s most gorgeous woman Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Big B might laud her as the greatest bahu, and the finest actress in Bollywood, but for stand-up comedian Russel Peters, the beauty is only good for laughs.

The Canadian comedian of Indian origin Russel Peters who keeps the world engrossed with his humour is surprisingly not too fond of Bollywood movies. A news daily quotes him as saying, “I wouldn’t watch a Bollywood film even if I am at the lowest point of my life. These films have horrible stories and terrible acting. I don’t know why your films have singing or dancing every other minute. Either you are telling a story or you are not.”

And, then comes a shocker as Russel states Aishwarya as an example of a bad actress. Here it is, from the horses’ mouth, “Aishwarya Rai is the biggest example of bad acting. She has proved it time and again how it can do wonders. In Bollywood, people can become superstars just by having a pretty face.”

Well, we certainly wish Russel a safe stay in India as he’s all set to perform live in Kolkata, Mumbai and Delhi this October. (ZEE)

Do you agree with Russel… is Aishwarya a bad actress and just a pretty face… your thoughts on this please… use the comments section below to send them to us.

  9. Does the question need an answer. Russel peters has a point. With bollywood’s bad spate at the box office it is clear that one of the main reasons is that bollywood only has a handful of talent, and sadly none of them are acclaimed for their beauty and sadly go unnoticed. Ash is a perfect example of bollywood’s “chocolate easter egg” syndrome. Beautifully packaged but empty on the inside – great looks, no talent . Looking at her box office record it is quite clear that she cannot hold a movie on her own. Her “box office hits” were always with established actors, namely salman, hritik, SRK, etc. even her so called hollywood flicks bombed at the bo, namely last legion, mistress of spices. She definitely is no meryl streep, hard to believe they will actually be making a movie together. Even the movie provoked did not get her the accolades such a movie usually gets, namely because she failed to emote the “battered wife” character. Like most bollywood actresses of late, they are all form and no substance, eg. katrina kaif, bipasha, amisha, kareena, deepika, etc – rarely do these actresses make it on talent alone. Even directors/producers bank on these actresses looks rather talent to score at the bo. Storylines that don’t require a “semi-naked look” somehow gets turned into one, thereby totally detracting from the storyline. Why movies such as dhoom2 did wel was clearly because of the “sizzle factor” – Ash in shorter than short skirt, bips continually parading in a bikini. The movie had no storyline (literally), everything looked faked and pasted, even the action scenes. Her marriage into the Bachan family only increased her market price because of her last name, not because of her acting. Her popularity overseas is namely because of her looks, take that away and what’s left ?

  13. This is just so damn absurd. How does this guy even understand who is a good actor and who isnt even if he doesnt understand the language? What is wrong with songs and dances? That is what the audiences here love and they work with us! What are hollywood films filled with? Either sex or violence, that is what they like and they get it! This moron claims tht bollywood movies are crap and still bothers to watch the films and learn the names of actors and actresses. Loser! Whether one likes it or not Ash is the only bollywood actor who is recognised abroad and is ready to be signed on without an audition. It is this “horrible actress” with whom hollywood actor Will Smith is dying to work with! So im guessing ur hollywood actors know squat abt talent, huh dude?

And to another comment here, which actress in bollywood today does anything more than revealing or dancing ard the tress? Not Kareena, not Bipasha and certainly not Katrina. Atleast Ash has done a few meaningful films like JA, Choker Bali, Provoked, Devdas (just to name a few). With the Khans and now Kumar around, it is definitely no small feat that Ash can hold her own even after more than 12 yrs of her entering bollywood, no other actress has done that!

  17. If Ash is bad actress then who is good actress in Bollywood. Please name it????Ash has look, she has style, she is intelligent/dignity/warm hearted and also hieght.God give evrything to her and she is modern goddess of India.Indian man actor like Sharukh,Hrithik, etc are depend box office mainly on dance and love scene.Ash’s movie Sarkar creates new history in Inidan cinema that without drama/song/music,but only Bachchans acting power took boxoffice and Sarkar was love and appreciate mainly from oversea educated peoples. If Ash is not good actor then its time to close Bollywood(Indian film Industry). This is big insult to Indian film industry and whole India.

  21. Shut your mouth Rusell Peters. I have seen number of English movies. They are technically sound but not good movies. At least Indian movies are superficial but Indian’s agree that there movie is far from truth, not like you people. And who the hell cares about Canadian film Industry.

  27. Anita/Sanju – Hellooo there ARE good actresses in Bollywood like Kajol, Vidya Balan, Rani, Kangana – How can you possibly forget them?
Ash is only good when she’s really given a hard training like Sanjay Bhansali in devdas and HDDCS where she won the best actress awards.
Although i do admire her for beauty and brains i dont think much of her as an actress.

  39. This is such a polarizing question! Lets look at the facts here, because I feel like the answer to this is NOT black and white like most of the people who have posted here would obviously like to believe.

    A. There are good actresses, there are bad ones, and there are decent ones. It’s a grey scale, not black and white. There are women who are far better actresses than Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. There are women who are far, far worse. Aishwarya Rai has had as many good and bad roles as anyone else. Someone said that she’s exactly the same in all of her roles, and I say to you, how many roles are available to young, beautiful indian actresses? There are some variations, but leading female roles in mainstream Bollywood are either married, unmarried, or prostitutes, happy or unhappy (when unhappy, they’re usually downright miserable) and they all suffer or enjoy basically the same things. So, actresses are asked to cry at the same lover abandoning them, at the same insult, over and over again. How much variation can you really expect from these characters? That’s just the way most Bollywood films seem to be. I’d also like to point out that in all of the movies I’ve seen her in, the male leading roles also (with but a few exceptions) fall into the same roles over and over. So, the same girl and the same guy fall in love over and over again in every movie and the only thing that adds some pizazz is the gusto with which they go after the usual dramatic scenes and how spectacular the images are, which brings me to my second point:

    B. Aishwarya Rai IS one of the most beautiful people in the world. I will take a moment here to say that though I’m not one of Aishwarya Rai’s fanatical fans (I don’t think that rays of light shine from her every pore, like some people seem to… probably those people who’ve been polarized into compensating for those who “would rather watch paint dry than watch her”) there have been many shots of her where I’ve been caught dumb and I’m forced to say “wow… can you get more beautiful than that?”. So while she’s certainly presented with roles because she can bring that spectacular look of hers to the part, she’s not a ’shell’ or whatever people have called her. She may play the same roles, but she does so sincerely. She’s not Tabu or Kajol, but people are all unique. I find people insulting anyone offensive, but especially when people assume and imagine that they have any knowledge of a person on which to base their negative assumptions. To that end I will say that in the interviews I have seen of hers, she speaks wonderfully, and seems to me to be an incredible person. I feel like she cares about her roles and is sincere. Sincerity is more important to me than raw emotive talent. Sincerity brings me along for the ride and creates an experience, and it’s up to me to think about it. Raw emotiveness can get jarring and grate on my nerves, and I don’t enjoy being forced roughly into feeling or seeing something all the time (Rai can certainly do that too… that scene in Umrao Jaan where the Nawab Sultan rejects her had me miserable).

Finally, my last point: C. She has done some good work. Umrao Jaan was convincing. They didn’t scream the sickening truths of the life of a courtesan at us. For example, they didn’t have violent, graphic rape scenes like they would in Hollywood. Bollywood movies are designed to imply suffering so that they stay accessible to all audiences. But Aishwarya Rai made me suffer with her. I didn’t care if I’d seen that role played before, I was brought into the pain of the situations she was presented with. I cried, and when the movie was over I thought about what I’d seen. She never seemed fake. I also really enjoyed Guru. It was a good movie, and the relationship between the two leads (aided I’m sure by the fact that they were engaged by that time) was touching and thought provoking. Devdas was spectacular, and it would not have been so awe inspiring without Aishwarya Rai. The acting was good. Again, she made me feel what the character was feeling. What more is there to acting? What higher purpose? If being made to feel something isn’t acting, then I don’t know what is. And, I think something that is VERY IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER is that we don’t all feel the same way about the same things. THERE IS NO BLACK AND WHITE. Aishwarya Rai’s performances can do it for me, and I like to watch them when the rest of the movie seems good. Everyone else is within their rights to say “you know, I just haven’t enjoyed her movies… I think it’s because – blah, blah, blah”. But the question “is she good or not” is about as silly as the question “is rain good or bad?” – yes and no, depending *shrug*

  41. i agree abt aishwarya.. most of th bollywood actresses are famous just because of their looks.. about acting skills i dnt think kareena, ash, amisha n whtever r newhere near to gud acting… i think rani n vidya r better actors..

  43. I agree with Russell….this woman doesnt know acting one bit…she is very very fake…she is so stiff. Smile is so damn artificial. Yes she is very good looking…thats it ! She is like the how blondes are…lol.

  45. Honestly, i have to agree with him. She’s a terrible actress. When she cries in a movie, it’s so bad I can’t even watch. She whimpers through every movie. She won’t make it in American films.

  47. Oh she’s a terrible actress and really, it’s embarrassing when she is seen as an “ambassador” for India, Indian culture, Indian art, Indian beauty….way way overrated!

  49. if you were to compare ashwariyas acting with hollywood actors, shes absolutely rubbish, and if u were to compare her acting to even bollywood stars, like Kajor, Rani mukrajee she is terrible. remind me again if she actually when to stage school/drama school? no she did not, she happened to have a pretty face and did some modeling and hence ended up actting.its an easy root to take once modelling was over. I mean i would have given her more credit if she stuck to her architectural degree and did modelling on the side, but she gave it up. shes just a pretty face, even that, i mean u cant classify someone as the most beautiful women in the world, cos there are sooooo many women who are beautiful but just dont happen to be celebrities, they r doctors, teachers, mothers….
