Going back in time, free India, the birth of a new India, liberated by a number of great Indian leaders. This then gave birth to a new breed of leaders, folk who dreamt the new dream – of taking free India to another level of freedom, the freedom to be 100% free in the newly free India.
Guru is a story of a person that lives within ALL of us. I mean that, and I hope it inspires us all to awaken that element from our souls. Go watch the film, not just as cinema, not just for the great Mani Ratnam, not for a good performance from Abhishek and even Aishwarya, go and see it, to be inspired, from a story that is very close to the real life story of the late Dhirubhai Ambani.
Reel Life – Guru Desai, a villager moves to turkey where he works carrying oil tins. He moves on and does various jobs, including trading in spices. When he is finally promoted to a sales supervisor, in appreciation of his good work, he packs it all in stating ‘If everyone knows I am good at my job, and if the English think I am good at my job, then why should I stay here and work for them? I will go back home and work for myself’. I guess that was the turning point that clearly differentiates Guru from many of us mere mortals.
Guru comes back and dynamically starts his own business. He doesn’t have all the money he needs and so he marries Aishwarya as her father had gathered dowry to get her married. Guru understands only business and is willing to work to get results. Being impressed with his attitude, is Mithun who plays a newspaper owner. Mithun believes in the truth and nothing but the truth. He will use his power and his newspaper talk about that and also expose the wrong that people and society does. He treats Abhishek as a son, who very quickly moves on to become a powerful and dynamic man. His ways of doing business are different, he believes in raising money from the people and sharing it back with them. Obviously as he grows, there are others who are threatened by him. They try and stop him, but he is on a roll, facing the challenges the higher he gets, until one day he when he does what is normal to many business houses. He fabricates a story about the competition and makes sure that the media hears about it. This is where a divide takes places between Mithun and Abhishek. Mithun is disgusted with the way Abhishek has evolved using means other than the truth to get where he is, and so he gets his loyal editor – Madhavan, to do whatever it takes (keeping with the truth) to expose the wrong that Abhishek is doing. There starts the battle, which consist of most of the second half of the film. This consist of how Madhavan does everything to expose Abhishek’s ways, while Abhishek in return goes stronger and defiant with what he does. Finally, Madhavan’s efforts pay up and part of Abhishek’s empire is sealed by the government and he is summoned in court. What happens there is what I shall leave out of here, as you do need to watch the film. Now mind you, let me say this that nothing magical or powerful happens here. Mani sir has been known for lack of steam at the end of his films.
