Movie Review: Ru-Ba-Ru

Debutante director Arjun Bali’s ‘Ru-Ba-Ru’ is out in theaters. Starring Randeep Hooda and Shahana Goswami in the central roles, the film is an out and out love story. The movie tells you as to what happens when one tends to take love for granted and opts to ignore any feeling of love for those who matter. Arjun has borrowed the subject from the Hollywood film, ‘If Only’. Although the man has taken the theme from the American film but as it happens mostly with our Bollywood filmmakers (who borrow the subjects from Hollywood), he too fails to generate any oomph for the audience. Reason: bad direction and poorly written screenplay. The film very barely manages to complete the length. Here the writer seems to be loosing grip over the story. The emotional sequences seem to be forced into the narrative sometimes and the dialogues appear unfit at times. Nonetheless, since it a modern day story so it has some attraction for the young generation.
Tara (Shahana Goswami) and Nikhil (Randeep Hooda) are in a live in relationship. But other than the live in aspect, the entire flick has a stereotypical story. Nikhil is a workaholic and has no time for his girlfriend. He begins to take Tara for granted. As their emotions take a backseat, the spark between the couple start to die down. The weeping girlfriend, on the other hand, wants commitment but the boy is too busy to make it. Taking a stand on their relationship headed nowhere, Tara decides to walk out of the rutted affair. Soon the guy evaluates the relationship when the things go wrong. He tries his best to change the events to his convenience but destiny has different plans.
The movie starts with romance but turns into a psychological thriller. The climax ends up with confusing note. Arjun Bali’s direction is mundane. Andre Menezes’ cinematography is okay. The music is strictly passable. As for the performers, Randeep Hooda delivers a fine performance. Shahana is pretty good too. Other cast is average.
On the whole, ‘Ru-Ba-Ru’ is an avoidable venture.
