They say that Govinda has been away from movies, but if you look at his releases again, he really hasn’t been away. He has had more movie releases than the average hero, albeit all of them have been flops. Govinda’s career has taken a nose-dive, while other actors from his era, have seen theirs catapulted. It’s just the luck of the draw, our Govinda has not concentrated on his film work as much as he should have, and that has affected is overall box office performance. With a little help from his fans, of which he has plenty, Chi-Chi will fast rise again!
Bhagam Bhag is supposed to be his big-time come-back, with Salaam-E-Ishq and Partners to follow. Priyadarshan is the king of comedies and what better place to re-start his career engine. But Priyadarshan has not done justice to our Chi-Chi. Of course, we were not expecting this film to have Govinda has the main lead, but what we didn’t expect was for him to be sidelined from the action. Akshay Kumar is the main hero of this farce, and one wonders as to why Govinda signed on, was it because desperate times called for desperate measures?
Picture this. This film could quite easily have been Hera Pheri 3, or Garam Masala 2. With our Govinda in the role that could have been done by Suniel Shetty or John Abraham. In Bhagam Bhag, Govinda is merely an on-looker, like the rest of us. He doesn’t have much of a meatier role, and his presence in the film is just there to make up the numbers. He looks old and a little over-weight and even Paresh Rawal shines more than him.
But saying all the above, Govinda is using Bhagam Bhag as the first step of many, and one hopes that these steps are quickly taken, with Govinda reaching the heights his talent deserves.
Bhagam Bhag is a comedy farce, with all the masala added. It’s mayhem at its most ridiculous. To watch the film you are required to leave your brain at home. The film is enjoyable, if one does not look at it critically. It may not be of the calibre that Phir Hera Pheri and Garam Masala are, but it sure does entertain you. And it is entertainment what the audience wants.
Priyadarshan does what he has done well, many times prior, that is make you smile. If that is what this director is an expert in, that who am I to begrudge, after all it is a quite a successful niche. Priyadarshan has failed to find success in non-comedies, with the likes of Kyon Ki… to his credit, so let’s hope he continues to churn out films like these instead.
Akshay Kumar is at his level best, and performs well above average. If it wasn’t for him then this film would not do that well, and one admires Priyadarshan’s choice in casting. Akshay Kumar has fast become a talented comedian, and now needs to show his skills as a bad guy, as he already his immensely popular as a main lead hero. Hopefully, a director will come along soon, and offer him a villainous role. Then, we would surely have seen the complete Akshay package.
