Movie Review: Ugly Aur Pagli
Film Critic: Goher Iqbal Punn
Cast: Mallika Shrewat, Ranvir Shorey and Tinnu Anand
Producer: Pritsih Nandy Communications
Director: Sachin Khot
Music: Anu Malik
Pritish Nandy Communications – the makers of the rib-tickling comedy, ‘Pyaar Ke Side Effects’, have come up with a romantic comedy, ‘Ugly Aur Pagli’. With a catchy title, the flick is directed by the debutante Sachin Khot. The tagline – 99 slaps and one kiss instantly attracts the attention as well. The viewers expect the outing to be a wacky-joy ride, but when they leave the theater after watching it, they have nothing to carry home. Instead the sorrow of wasting the money travels with them.

If you are stepping into the cinema with a hope that the movie will be laced with a good storyline to get you glued to your seats, then don’t enter and leave the theater right away since there is no story at all in the film rather it’s the incidents and moments which turn this mundane enterprise into a film. The plot has nothing to offer to the audiences. The writers seem to be lacking in the art of crafting a script. Mallika Shrewat and Ranvir Shorey, the main protagonists are the ones, who make you sit in the theaters till the final reels. Otherwise there is nothing to attract your attention in this package. Even in most of the scenes, the humour falls flat except a few ones, where you find a smile on your face. First half of the film does catch you from tip to toe but the post interval portion lacks the grip.
Ugly Aur Pagli is about Kabir (Ranvir Shorey), a loser who has been studying engineering for the last five years and believes in taking it easy in life. One fine day, he saves the life of Kuhu (Mallika Sherawat), a violent and aggressive girl who loves to booze and is always out of control. Kuhu makes Kabir wear petticoat and walk in street, ride a bicycle without a seat, wear high heel sandals and steal the flowers from the parks. She slaps him for everything he does. Kabir wants to see Kuhu happy and whatever she says he does. Both love each other but fail to reveal their feelings. Kuhu has a past. How the lovers meet forms the rest of the saga.

Kabir and Kuhu decide to tie the knot. Kabir goes to meet her parents who ask him for his identity card (wonder…do the girl’s parents ask for an ID card from the boy who comes to marry their daughter?). He opens his wallet and a packet of condemn drops out. Her parents kick him out of the house. And amidst all this, Kuhu is fast a sleep.
The first half of the film is okay but the second half ruins the magic utterly. The story is stretched without any valid reason. And the sequences seem to be remodeled with mere modifications.
Kabir and Kuhu run off to Goa where Kuhu realizes that she has not yet gotten over her past relationship. Back in Mumbai, she refuses to meet Kabir and disappears suddenly in Kolkata for two years. Her parents decide to get her married to Gaurav Kapoor. He is given 10 ways to impress Kuhu by Ranvir. The question is how does Gaurav know Ranvir? The other question is that why Kabir gives him her likes and dislikes whereas he is desperately in love with her and has been waiting for her for last two years (indigestible …!).

The debutante director has tried his best to make the flick impressive but fails due to a very ordinary script. The music of the film (Anu Malik) is poor as well. Only ‘Talli’ and ‘Karle Gunaah’ glide on your ears. Rest of the soundtrack needs to give a skip.
The movie truly belongs to Ranvir and Mallika. Mallika enacts the job very naturally and Ranvir is an incredible brilliant actor and portrays his character superbly. Tinnu Anand and Sushmita Mukherjee do well too. Zeenat Aman is there only for one sequence. The rest of the cast is just about average.
On the whole, Ugly Aur Pagli is a below average enterprise that does not promise to fetch audience to the cinema halls.
