Genre: Comedy

For the past few years, the not-so-comic Govinda films have bored us to the brim with many lacklustre attempts. Last couple of years, 60% of the films that did miserably were comedy flicks which fizzed out at the box offfice. But, 2006 has been a great year for the comedy movies. Many slap-stick comedies like Pyar Ke Side Effects and a satire like Khosla Ka Ghosla did well at the box office. Lage Raho Munna Bhai is again a film with great comic timing. In 2006, the comedy films that drew a lot of acclaim and praise are highlighted below:

Lage Raho Munna Bhai: The sequel to Munna Bhai MBBS had a more different way to touch the hearts of millions both at the Indian and the international platform. The comic duo of Munna and Ciruit, played by Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi became a favourite with the audiences. The ‘Gandhigiri’ element used in the movie was a novel way of presenting the great man’s principles to an otherwise indifferent nation. The officially blockbuster hit is in its 14th week at the theatres. The movie was screened at the UN meetings and applauded at many of the film festivals across the world. It has already earned a net gross of 69,89,00,000. Bole To…….. Super-Duper Hit Chhe!

Phir Hera Pheri: The first hit sequel of the year was a huge success at alll the cicuits. Babu Rao and his friends portray the common man on the streets of Mumbai who resort to “Hera Pheri” again for their living. Great performances by the actors, though a weaker script than the original one. The third sequel is now awaited by the audiences.

Apna Sapna Money Money: The movie continues to do above average business across the country. The USP of the movie is Ritesh Deshmukh’s female get-ups for the movie and a hilarious on-screen chemistry between Anupam Kher and Ritesh. Slap-stick comedy and sizzling babes got the movie a lot of audience attention. In its fourth week, its net gross is 13,41,00,000

Pyar Ke Side Effects: Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus was personified in the movie which got a lot appreciation and generated interests among the youngsters. The movie for a change had Mallika Sherawat in a likeable role along with the forever-bachelor Rahul Bose. A nice juicy humorous flick.

Malamaal Weekly: Priyadarshan’s movie was a laugh-riot all the way. With stalwarts like Om Puri, Paresh Rawal, Asrani and the talented Rajpal Yadav, Ritesh Deshmukh, the movie had to be a winner. An amazingly simple and yet interesting storyline was the USP of the movie.

Chup Chup Ke: So, Kareena Kapoor remaining quite did prove that her films can work well even if she shuts up. Jokes apart, the movie again had the stock of amazing talent from Om Puri, Rajpal Yadav, Shahid Kapoor et al. The movie was a Priyadarshan film to the core and has a real binding storyline to it. Great comic timings by the actors.

Golmaal- Fun Unlimited: The movie couldn’t live up to its namesake’s standards but did fairly well at the box office. The collections dipped lower after the first couple of weeks due to the Mumbai train blasts and the Cricket series. But, the movie was appreciated by the ones who got into the theatres. A rare attempt at comedy by Ajay Devgan was a dissapointment, Arshad Warsi was again brilliant along with Tusshar Kapoor and Sharman Joshi.

Khosla Ka Ghosla: The satire is laced with good comic timings and wonderful performances by Anupam Kher and Bomaan Irani. The movie is a light take on a common man’s fight with the powerful and the mighty in the society. A heavy issue dealt with fun and entertainment.

The next year 2007, will have an equal number of share of slap-stick comedy and some good serious comedy films inlcuding B.R. Chopra’s Pappu Paas Ho Gaya. So, gear up for yet another year filled with fun, frolic and entertainment. He he he he he!
