Golden Globe nominations announced

The nominations for the 64th Annual Golden Globe Awards, which are scheduled to be held on 15 January, 2007, have been announced. Brad Pitt starrer Babel leads the contenders list with a total of seven nominations, including best dramatic picture.

Mel Gibson’s bloody Mayan epic Apocalypto has been nominated for best foreign-language flick. On the other hand, Clint Eastwood has grabbed two nominations for best director for Flags of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima.

Leonardo DiCaprio has also been nominated twice in the best dramatic film actor category for The Departed and Blood Diamond.

Helen Mirren has been nominated for best-actress for playing Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen as well as for best actress in a TV miniseries or movie for Elizabeth I and Prime Suspect: The Final Act. Along with Mirren, the others who have been nominated in the best-actress are Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Kate Winslet.

Martin Scorsese has bagged the best director nomination for The Departed. Previously, Scorsese has been nominated five times for best director at the Oscars but hasn’t managed a statuette as yet. The Departed followed Babel with six nominations, including nominations for actors Jack Nicholson and Mark Wahlberg.

Additionally, this is for the first time that the Golden Globes have an award for best animated feature film. Contending in this category are Cars, Happy Feet and Monster House.

India, however failed to find a nomination at the Golden Globes. The films that were contending are Lage Raho Munnabhai, Omkara and Rang De Basanti. Meera Nair’s Water was also in the running from Canada.

Best Motion Picture – Drama – Babel (Paramount Pictures), Bobby (Bold Films; The Weinstein Company), The Departed (Warner Bros. Pictures), Little Children (New Line Cinema) and The Queen (A Granada Production; Miramax Films).

Best Performance By An Actress In A Motion Picture – Drama – Penelope Cruz (Volver), Judi Dench (Notes On A Scandal), Maggie Gyllenhaal (Sherrybaby), Helen Mirren (The Queen) and Kate Winslet (Little Children).

Best Performance By An Actor In A Motion Picture – Drama – Leonardo DiCaprio (Blue Diamond and The Departed), Peter O’Toole (Venus), Will Smith (The Pursuit Of Happyness) and Forest Whitaker (The Last King Of Scotland).

Best Motion Picture – Comedy Or Musical – Borat: Cultural Learnings Of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation Of Kazakhstan (One America; Twentieth Century Fox), The Devil Wears Prada (Twentieth Century Fox), Dreamgirls (DreamWorks Pictures/Paramount Pictures), Little Miss Sunshine (Fox Searchlight Pictures) and Thank You For Smoking (Fox Searchlight Pictures).

Best Performance By An Actress In A Motion Picture – Comedy Or Musical – Annette Bening (Running With Scissors), Toni Collette (Little Miss Sunshine), Beyoncé Knowles (Dreamgirls), Meryl Streep (The Devil Wears Prada) and Renee Zellweger (Miss Potter).

Best Performance By An Actor In A Motion Picture – Comedy Or Musical – Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat: Cultural Learnings Of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation Of Kazakhstan), Johnny Depp (Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest), Aaron Eckhart (Thank You For Smoking), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Kinky Boots) and Will Ferrell (Stranger Than Fiction).

Best Animated Feature Film – Cars (Walt Disney Pictures/Pixar Animation Studio); Happy Feet (Warner Bros. Pictures/Village Roadshow Pictures) and Monster House (Columbia Pictures; Sony Pictures Releasing).

Best Foreign Language Film – Apocalypto (USA) (Touchstone Pictures/Icon Productions; Buena Vista Pictures Distribution), Letters From Iwo Jima (USA/Japan) (Warner Bros.
