Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan are three actors that have been classed as ‘legends’. Their star status is without a doubt par excellence. They have given hours of enjoyment to film lovers over the decades, acting their hearts out, and achieving ‘godly’ stature.
Dilip Kumar’s age has given way, but his fans still long to see him on the big screen once more, and maybe with a little persistence that may happen soon. Even in his twig light years, Dilip Kumar performed out of his skin, as Shakti and Saudagar have proved.
Amitabh Bachchan is currently going through the peak of his career, churning out hit after hit, as directors regularly bring out the best of his acting. He is regarded as the best ‘character actor’ out there, but that is not what he is famous for these days. These days, roles are being written for him specially, which is a rarity in Bollywood.
Shah Rukh Khan is the best actor out there, currently. He is picking and choosing his films wisely, and that has helped his career reach even more heights. His tenure as the lead actor is guaranteed for a few years yet, and even after that, not a single sole can bet against him achieving more accolades in Bollywood as a character actor.
But as each generation passes, a new star is born. A new name shines out and starts to melt hearts and minds alike. Every so often, one of these stars is hyped as the next Dilip Kumar, the next Amitabh Bachchan, or the next Shah Rukh Khan. Actors such as Anil Kapoor, Mithun Chakraborty, and Sanjay Dutt have, initially, been in this category. But, as the years passed, they suffered bleak periods at the Box Office, and were then taken out and put back in the same fold of actors as the rest. Even today, actors like Hrithik Roshan, Abhishek Bachchan, and the yet un-seen Ranbir Kapoor, are being predicted as legendary actors.
But what I ask you is this… Who is the future of Bollywood? Is it Hrithik Roshan or Abhishek Bachchan, or could it be Saif Ali Khan or Shahid Kapoor. Could the soon to make his debut Ranbir Kapoor, be that legend?
Here are my thoughts on two of these, Hrithik Roshan and Abhishek Bachchan…
Hrithik Roshan: As 2006 comes to an end, this actor is currently riding high on the Bollywood wave. His performance as superhero Krrish gave him huge critical praise, while the bad-guy role in the recently released Dhoom 2 proved that he can act mean too. Many are betting on Hrithik to get both Best Actor and Best Villain awards next year. He has Jodhaa Akbar coming up, directed by Oscar nominated director of Lagaan, Ashutosh Gowarikar, and possible a film with his father; albeit not another superhero episode. Hrithik is talented and has the looks to go with it, plus he is by far the best dancer in Bollywood, so one would assume he could be the next ‘legend’. But I don’t agree with that… Hrithik works well with good directors, and a legend has to work well with even bad directors too. Hrithik has not proven that yet, and I don’t think that he will. A legend can make a bad story, a bad script, and rubbish co-stars, even look good. Hrithik does not have that edge.
Abhishek Bachchan: Having the greatest Bollywood actor ever lived as your father (Amitabh Bachchan), and probably the most beautiful girl in the world as your girlfriend (Aishwarya Rai), you just can’t do no wrong… can you? He maybe the next big thing, but for me he is the next big thing minus a solo hit. Abhishek Bachchan has yet to provide the Bollywood audience a blockbuster, with him as a solo actor. He has appeared in multi-starrer flicks, which have gone on to do huge business, but I still hope that a day comes when we see an Abhishek Bachchan headliner become a super-hit. The future may look good on paper for the star-son, but to achieve legendary status he has a long way to go. While Hrithik Roshan may have his career-car on the road, Abhishek’s vehicle has yet to be put into gear.
Ranbir Kapoor I have not yet seen and can’t make a judgement, while for me Shahid Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan just don’t have that edge. Any other actors I have not listed, because no-one else comes to mind as a maybe-legend. But, you must have noticed that I have left one name out. One name for me that is, without a doubt, the next legend, if he already is not. The past few years, his films have been pure gold and a treat to watch, with one even being selected for the Oscars. And that person is no other than, the versatile actor Aamir Khan.
Aamir has proved over the years that he can act in different roles, and act very well. His pick and choose policy is what has defined his ‘greatness’ for me. For me he has just reached the beginning of his peak, and has a long way to go yet. I eagerly await news on his forthcoming signings, as each film he signs is something different. With every new Aamir Khan release, you feel as though you have seen something fresh. He may be a little old to be termed as the next legend, but age really doesn’t matter for male actors in Bollywood.
At the beginning of this article I wrote three names, Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, and Shah Rukh Khan. And now with my hand on my heart, I can add, that in 10 years time, Aamir Khan will also be in that list.

legends dont’ rely on daddy (absr) to make their career. they do it on their own based on hard work and determination. abjr is one lucky guy. please don’t compare him to hritik b/c we have already seen that outcome in dhoom 2. even if abjr was not in the film it still would have done awesome business. legends are people that make impacts in films (good or bad) before yuva nobody cared about abjr. nobody. he was just an average actor. but thanks to daddy’s connections with yash chopra and a couple of multistarrers he made it so far. the fact is like said before is he can’t deliver that “solo” hit and probably won’t be able to. i doubt guru will be a hit. as for hritik just giv ehim some time he has potential to be a legend. all he has to do is flex his acting. and the other two khans salman and amir deserved to be called legends too. remember people flocked to see salman in maine pyar kiya. aamir made lagaan which went to oscars. but please don’t insult us with putting abjr in this category. he is the most overhyped overrated actor out there. at best he will be remembered a good supporting actor or that cameo actor or maybe daddy’s good boy. legends are people that you want to see.
and for ranbir we will see. but funny all your so called legends in the making are just actors film filmi families. what about outsiders.
Oh no…here is another ‘I need the attention’ type of an article. Seriously you need to re-think before you print your articles…since when did Ranbir Kapoor even come in the line of legends? He has not even started acting to know how good or bad he is.
Hrithik does not work well with other directors apart from his Dad? Really? If I am not wrong then Fiza is one of his MOST critically acclaimed performances, that was NOT by his father. Mission Kashmir, K3G, Lakshya and lately Dhoom 2 are all movies which were NOT directed by his father and he has proven his excellence as an actor in all of them. There is a limit to which you should show your bias. Why does Abhishek even come in the category of legends? Because YOU like him? Ha! Abhishek is a good actor but he has zilch star power and until Yuva came his way…he acted crappy. Even in Umrao Jaan and D:2 he FAILED to shine through and he is YET to receive even one hit without the presence of his dad in the movie, he’s lucky to have the Bachchan tag since it has stopped the media from trashing him and his dad’s friends have helped him get movies over and over after failing.
So lets not even bring in the comparison. After Mr Bachchan if there is one actor who deserves to be called a Legend it is Aamir Khan, he has worked with old directors, new commers and always come up with brilliant performances and hits. SRK dosent even fall in the category, so lets not insult Aamir by putting them in the same category and insult Hrithik by bringing Abhishek into the picture.
Shahrukh does not belong to the legend category at all. If someone thinks so..it only reflects his/her ignorance of what legends are supposed to be made of. SRK maybe a superstar but he definitely is not a legend….his acting skills are no where closer to Dilip Kumar or Amitabh Bachchan. He is not a great actor. All he is a good showman who knows how to market himself. Aamir definitely is on his way to becoming a legend though.
Even considering AB jr in this list is a JOKE !!! Had he not been the son of Amitabh Bachchan no one wld even have thought of considering him as a probable candidate. Let the guy first deliver a solo hit and prove himself to be worthy of the ’star’ tag that he has been given so cheaply and undeservingly. Uunfortunately such titles are bestowed on every tom, dick and harry by the media these days especially if they have a daddy like Amitabh Bachchan.
Well, the media may eulogize the bachchan son as the next big thing but sorry, the audiences think differently. Wish media too did a reality chk before writing such irresponsible stuff. As far as we are concerned Jr AB will always remain in the ‘Next big thing’ category and will never become that ‘Big thing’ no matter how much the biased media tries to make him one
As far as Hrithik Roshan is concerned, he is definetely a LEGEND in the MAKING. The guy is super talented and very verstaile. A fantabulous actor indeed. Those who say he works well only with top directors need to chk out his performances closely in the movies that did not do well at the Box Office and were not with the top directors at that time like FIZA…what a brilliant performance…unparalleled. Mission Kashimir- again an Awesome performance. Lakshya….another mindblowing performance. His peformances in otherwise bad movies like AMALL, NTJH etc too were very very good as was acknowledged by the critics too at that time. But alas the media has short memory. These films may not have worked, but hrithik surely did.
Hrithik Roshan is a fantastic actor, a superstar and a legend in the making. Make no mistake abt it !!
i dont think shahrukh be in legend category he has yet to prove while upcoming stars i think hrithik and abhishek both have potential to become superstar.hrithik has more potential because of his dancing and acting skill is far ahead than abhishek and plz dont forget salman and akshay both guys having good time out in recent films.plz dont compare shahrukh to amitabh and dilip kumar they are way ahead and they had more respect than any one in this industry.

After the legendry Dilip Kumar,Amitabh Bachan and Shahrukh Khan the only actor at present or future(Ranbir Kapoor) can even reach those legendary heights is none other than Hrithik Roshan.Through his films he has shown what he’s capable of be it kaho na pyar hai, koi mil gaya, krrish, Dhoom2 and probably with Jodah Akbar too.The only actor of his generation to do variety of roles, won more awards than his compettetors and has been so successful to give competition to SRK for awards.And there is one more point no actor be it a legendary actor or any hollywood actor is greater than the movie or story if the story is bad even Dilip Amitabh or SRk can’t make it a hit and thats a fact.As for ABjr he is no competition for Hrithik as it has been proven in Dhoom2 he never gave a solo hit yet(7years in the industry) he got praised last year 2005 when Hrithik didn’t do any movies and SRK did bad films (Paheli).Compare it to this year where Amir,SRK,Sanjay has given blockbusters the only actor to give competition is none other than Hrithik who may win this year best actor award amongst the toughest competition ever.And you don’t see ABjr mentioned anywhere because he’ll never reach at that level.So my verdict is that the only actor of this generation that can be a Legend is one and only Hrithik Roshan.
SRK a legend?. I agree with other two in your list. i think the author know nothing about acting. How can he even consider SRK as a good actor? .Agreed he is a boxoffice champ, but not a good actor. Just watch some of the movies of kamal Hasan, Mammootyy and Mohanlal. You will be ashamed to call SRK as an actor, leave upon good actor. As far as future legends are considered i think Hrithik can really become one. He has offlate started steps in the right direction and is definitely a better actor than SRK

With Amitabh the age of real superstars & legends like Dilip Kumar comes to an end. The era of Dilip Kumar & then Amitabh will have no replacements. Amit filled the void created by Dilip Kumar’s absence. But there is no one to fill the void once Amitabh exits. There will be brilliant actors like Aamir, Hiritheck & Saif etc but the charisma of a Dilip Kumar or Amitabh will be no more.Though I differ when you say Amitabh is the greatest actor ever lived.Pl Correct it to read the greatest star. He benefited from copying the ‘under play’ technique of his idol Dilip Kumar but ‘Method acting’ is not evryone’s forte. The late Motilal & then Dilip Kumar remain the sole greatest exponents of natural acting as lead male actors & Dilip Kumar solely as a super star cum thespian.
It seems you were compelled (or paid for) to write this article after Dhoom2’s phenomenal success which proves that Hrithik and only Hrithik is a legend in the making. Abhisekh never had a chance and SRK is being given a run for his money by Hrithik. Is that the reason why this article was so necessary to try (pathetically) to divert the public’s opinion about Hrithik, AB Jr and SRK? And put SRK in the list of legends? Are you serious? And then you bring in some new-comer to compete with Hrithik? There is just only one person who will eventually get into the list of legends and he is Hrithik. not Abhisekh, not Ranbir and definitely not SRK!!
Dillip Kumar, Amitabh and Hrithik. In fact Hrithik is better than the other two. He has the face of an angel, the body of a greek god and he dances like a dream. The other two lacked these qualities. And Hrithik is not only a great actor, he is bold enough to experiment with roles like the ones in Lakshya, Koi Mil gaya and Krrish. It’s because of him KMG and Krrish are such big hits. He made them believable. Had it been anyone else, we would have laughed and mocked the movie and the films would fall flat on their faces. Dhooms didn’t have any story line at all. Silly robbery episodes. But did anyone realize that? No people were so mesmerized by Hrithik that they didn’t notice anything else. That’s star power…that’s a legend

This article was comical in every sense.Calling SRK a legend is insulting true legends just like that. SRK does not know even the ABCD of acting. He felexes his face as if he is imitating an ape all the time. And he is already fading out. Look at the pathetic boxoffice response of his latest films and compare it with the majestic response to Hrithik’s films. I personally think that from the present lot only Hrithik has the potential to become a legend. With correct choice of films he can definitely be one and the youth of India is behind him.
Dont compare SRK with DiipKumar or Amitabh Bachan. Srk is way behind them in terms of acting abilities and personality-he has only come so far becuase of underworld funding and that too has a religous bent to it. Hrithik Roshan, Abisheck and Akshay Khanna are all better looking and more importantly are leagues ahead when it comes to acting skills. All these actors surely deservet to be the next Badsha of the Hindi filmdom-but in my opinion none of them will make it because the mafia will only promote persons of a certain religous bent.

actually ppl getting jealous of srk. i agree that bigb is popular in india. but if u go anywhere inthe world like Israel,Peru,Brasil,Tibet,Canada,West Indies then u can see that they even dont know the names of other bollywood stars.They only know one name.That is SRK. Tanveer i think you are correct, shah rukh is definately a legened, he has given more hits than any one and on top his films are hit because of his performance. AB is a superstar but not legend. dilip kumar is certainly a legend. while hrithik can dance will but he is not as good in acting as SRK is. abishaik is there because of his father. he has no guts at all. ranbir kapoor, we will see him………..
I thinK Hrithik Roshan is the best actor of all time as he is the only actor who looks like a greek god,dances like a dream and gives solid performances back to back KNPH,FIZA,MISSION KASHMIR,KMG,LAKSHYA,KRRISH AND D:2.

If Amitabh were to die tomorrow( God forbid! I’m only talking hypothetically ) where would that leave Abhishek? In the lurch ofcourse. Yes he held his own in Guru but he simply cant hold up to being a LEGEND, his artistry and even his sex appeal is not that masterful. As for Sharukh he can only fit into one type of role- the ardent lover, that’s why the Don was a flop. How many films has Hrithik done to date? not many compared to the others in the race although he’s a good actor looker and dancer, he’s just too aloof to be a legend.I think its time to think out of the box and come up with Ajay Devgan, yes he does not have the “classic” good looks but he’s devastatingly attractive and a veteran actor, just see his Filmography and the types of role he has successfully performed in. Also he’s just oozing sex appeal and has been doing the best films for over a decade and half.He’s not arrogant or difficult and is an easy going mischief maker. So I’d say he would be the next Bollywood legend.
just want to say that your analysis was very concise and well thought out; however the 90s saw the surge of the khans. Amir, Salman, and of course Sharuk. These three were on par, but somehow somewhere in the middle sharuk came on top. From my understanding of the industry, Sharuk movies seems to be doing really well everywhere; whereas Amir’s are more international successes and Salman’s are more domestic (india). Regardless, these three have had their limelight. Amir will undoubtedly release great movies, but not at the rate that sharuk does (which is one of the characteristics of being a legend).
Unfortunetly, I think we are in the middle of shift and the next gen hero has yet to secure his position or show signs of dominance.
The thing about bollywood is, even if you suck, as long as your name gets out there with relatively successful yet numerous films, the public will come to like you. Hence even though I hate to state it, Abishik will most likely take the lead position after sharuk. He has the star friend / contact background to get his name out there and help support him. Knowing his background and earlier performance levels, I find him to be very fake; however he is obviously doing something right as he seems to be gaining alot of attention.
Sharkuk still has a long way to go before he retires, hopefully in that time someone new may rise from the ashes and steal the spotlight, only time will tell.. ..

The person u calling a non-actor ( came from THEATRES ) were Ompuri, Nasiruddin shah acted with him. He made his name through TV serial FUAJI n Circus. ( did u ever see kabhi haan kabhi naa “) i am sure ….. it will prove his acting credntials.

Dilip Kumar is a true legend and stands on the top. There are and will be no comparisons as there are never true comparisons to the one and only legend. Yes, other than that, you can say that Amitabh is a dream actor and has proved during his time. And now it is SRK. To be honest, no one comes close to SRK’s popularity and star power in this era, as of 2008. There are other great actors such as Amir and Hrithik, while Shahid Kapoor making his way up there but SRK stands tall and strong- King of bollywood. Amitabh, Dilip, SRK all clearly legends. We hear people saying that Shahid is the next SRK and Aamir is like the next Dilip, this is a true litmus test if people compare new comers to you. And remember, we are taking about the greatest heros of all time, that why Naseerudin shah, Anupam Kher and Amrish puri aren’t mentioned. These 3 have the most hits in history. Of the young actors I feel that Abhishek is most gifted in acting, Guru, Yuva and Dhoom (particularly when paired with good directors) but I think Ranbir will come out on top because he seems to have the most friends in the industry.
legends dont’ rely on daddy (absr) to make their career. they do it on their own based on hard work and determination. abjr is one lucky guy. please don’t compare him to hritik b/c we have already seen that outcome in dhoom 2. even if abjr was not in the film it still would have done awesome business. legends are people that make impacts in films (good or bad) before yuva nobody cared about abjr. nobody. he was just an average actor. but thanks to daddy’s connections with yash chopra and a couple of multistarrers he made it so far. the fact is like said before is he can’t deliver that “solo” hit and probably won’t be able to. i doubt guru will be a hit. as for hritik just giv ehim some time he has potential to be a legend. all he has to do is flex his acting. and the other two khans salman and amir deserved to be called legends too. remember people flocked to see salman in maine pyar kiya. aamir made lagaan which went to oscars. but please don’t insult us with putting abjr in this category. he is the most overhyped overrated actor out there. at best he will be remembered a good supporting actor or that cameo actor or maybe daddy’s good boy. legends are people that you want to see.

Oh no…here is another ‘I need the attention’ type of an article. Seriously you need to re-think before you print your articles…since when did Ranbir Kapoor even come in the line of legends? He has not even started acting to know how good or bad he is.
Hrithik does not work well with other directors apart from his Dad? Really? If I am not wrong then Fiza is one of his MOST critically acclaimed performances, that was NOT by his father. Mission Kashmir, K3G, Lakshya and lately Dhoom 2 are all movies which were NOT directed by his father and he has proven his excellence as an actor in all of them. There is a limit to which you should show your bias. Why does Abhishek even come in the category of legends? Because YOU like him? Ha! Abhishek is a good actor but he has zilch star power and until Yuva came his way…he acted crappy. Even in Umrao Jaan and D:2 he FAILED to shine through and he is YET to receive even one hit without the presence of his dad in the movie, he’s lucky to have the Bachchan tag since it has stopped the media from trashing him and his dad’s friends have helped him get movies over and over after failing.
So lets not even bring in the comparison. After Mr Bachchan if there is one actor who deserves to be called a Legend it is Aamir Khan, he has worked with old directors, new commers and always come up with brilliant performances and hits. SRK dosent even fall in the category, so lets not insult Aamir by putting them in the same category and insult Hrithik by bringing Abhishek into the picture.
Shahrukh does not belong to the legend category at all. If someone thinks so..it only reflects his/her ignorance of what legends are supposed to be made of. Those who say he works well only with top directors need to chk out his performances closely in the movies that did not do well at the Box Office and were not with the top directors at that time like FIZA…what a brilliant performance…unparalleled. Mission Kashimir- again an Awesome performance. Lakshya….another mindblowing performance. His peformances in otherwise bad movies like AMALL, NTJH etc too were very very good as was acknowledged by the critics too at that time. But alas the media has short memory. These films may not have worked, but hrithik surely did.

After the legendry Dilip Kumar,Amitabh Bachan and Shahrukh Khan the only actor at present or future(Ranbir Kapoor) can even reach those legendary heights is none other than Hrithik Roshan.Through his films he has shown what he’s capable of be it kaho na pyar hai, koi mil gaya, krrish, Dhoom2 and probably with Jodah Akbar too.The only actor of his generation to do variety of roles, won more awards than his compettetors and has been so successful to give competition to SRK for awards.And there is one more point no actor be it a legendary actor or any hollywood actor is greater than the movie or story if the story is bad even Dilip Amitabh or SRk can’t make it a hit and thats a fact.As for ABjr he is no competition for Hrithik as it has been proven in Dhoom2 he never gave a solo hit yet(7years in the industry) he got praised last year 2005 when Hrithik didn’t do any movies and SRK did bad films (Paheli).Compare it to this year where Amir,SRK,Sanjay has given blockbusters the only actor to give competition is none other than Hrithik who may win this year best actor award amongst the toughest competition ever.And you don’t see ABjr mentioned anywhere because he’ll never reach at that level.So my verdict is that the only actor of this generation that can be a Legend is one and only Hrithik Roshan.

With Amitabh the age of real superstars & legends like Dilip Kumar comes to an end. The era of Dilip Kumar & then Amitabh will have no replacements. Amit filled the void created by Dilip Kumar’s absence. But there is no one to fill the void once Amitabh exits. There will be brilliant actors like Aamir, Hiritheck & Saif etc but the charisma of a Dilip Kumar or Amitabh will be no more.Though I differ when you say Amitabh is the greatest actor ever lived.Pl Correct it to read the greatest star. He benefited from copying the ‘under play’ technique of his idol Dilip Kumar but ‘Method acting’ is not evryone’s forte. Dillip Kumar, Amitabh and Hrithik. In fact Hrithik is better than the other two. He has the face of an angel, the body of a greek god and he dances like a dream. The other two lacked these qualities. Dont compare SRK with DiipKumar or Amitabh Bachan. Srk is way behind them in terms of acting abilities and personality-he has only come so far becuase of underworld funding and that too has a religous bent to it. Hrithik Roshan, Abisheck and Akshay Khanna are all better looking and more importantly are leagues ahead when it comes to acting skills. just want to say that your analysis was very concise and well thought out; however the 90s saw the surge of the khans. Amir, Salman, and of course Sharuk. These three were on par, but somehow somewhere in the middle sharuk came on top. From my understanding of the industry, Sharuk movies seems to be doing really well everywhere; whereas Amir’s are more international successes and Salman’s are more domestic (india). Regardless, these three have had their limelight. Amir will undoubtedly release great movies, but not at the rate that sharuk does (which is one of the characteristics of being a legend).
Unfortunetly, I think we are in the middle of shift and the next gen hero has yet to secure his position or show signs of dominance.
The thing about bollywood is, even if you suck, as long as your name gets out there with relatively successful yet numerous films, the public will come to like you. Hence even though I hate to state it, Abishik will most likely take the lead position after sharuk. He has the star friend / contact background to get his name out there and help support him. Knowing his background and earlier performance levels, I find him to be very fake; however he is obviously doing something right as he seems to be gaining alot of attention.
Sharkuk still has a long way to go before he retires, hopefully in that time someone new may rise from the ashes and steal the spotlight, only time will tell.. ..
