The signature campaign by the Hindi film industry scheduled to be held on 12 December at Mumbai’s Film City to express its solidarity to the humanitarian and social contribution of Sanjay Dutt to the industry has been called off.
In a letter written by Sanjay Dutt to the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) and Cine and TV Artistes Association (CINTAA) general secretary Dharmesh Tiwari, Dutt has thanked his well wishers and appealed to the bodies to withdraw the signature campaign.
In the letter, he states, “When I heard that the film industry and its associations have decided to sign a letter in my support, it brought tears to my eyes and emotionally moved my sister (Priya Dutt) and me, especially since none of the Dutt family members were told of this. We were kept totally in the dark about this campaign. My sister and I have been taken aback by this gesture.”
He says, “I humbly thank everyone and request them to withdraw their signature campaign on 12 December 2006. The rest is in God’s hands. Like I have always said and I repeat, I have full faith in our Indian judiciary. The law will take its own course. Pray for me.”
Tiwari says, “The motive of the associations was never to call a strike or go against the Indian judicial system. An industry bandh would have resulted in loss of millions of rupees. The campaign was organised only to express the personal views of industry people.”
The CINTAA and FWIC Association has 22 crafts operational under it, of which The Allied Mazdoor Association was jointly formed by Mithoon and Sanjay Dutt almost two decades ago.
