Coming from a Yash Raj banner, Tashan already had an excess baggage of expectations from it. Speculations about Kareena wearing a bikini, Saif’s son Ibrahim making his debut, Saif-Bebo’s first film together successfully added to the hype the film needed! But hype has always acted as a double edged sword in terms of making or breaking a film at the box office and unfortunately for Tashan the hype has back fired big time!
We’d like to know if director Vijay Krishna Acharya was in great depression when he penned down the script of Tashan! The film which starts off as a stylish thriller leads on to becoming a 70’s ‘ dukh bhari kakani’ or emotional revenge drama!
A call centre executive cum skirt chaser Jimmy Clif [Saif Ali Khan, impresses] is entrusted the responsibility of teaching English to a gangster Bhaiyyaji [Anil Kapoor, overacts] who holds great fascination for the English language (for reasons best known to him!). But Bhaiyyaji’s secretary Pooja [Kareena Kapoor, hot!] who puts Jimmy through to Bhaiyyaji has her own hidden intentions behind her act which Jimmy is clueless about! As expected in no time Jimmy lands up in trouble and has no where to go except for accompanying Bachchan Pandey (Akshay Kumar, wasted!) and set out on a mission to find out a culprit of Bhaiyyaji, failing which he’d be shot dead!
Tashan is all about con men just like Dhoom and Race. However, Tashan fails to keep you on the edge of your seat (especially post interval) as the director keeps shuttling his film’s genre from being an action thriller to an emotional soppy family drama! The characters’ double cross strategies too are predictable and the ‘suspense’ element which is a must in this genre of films itself is lacking making the film weak and an absolute drag!
Jhoom Barabar Jhoom was an attempt of Shaad Ali to make a different film and Vijay Krishna Acharya has followed his foot steps but the point is a film cannot make do without a good script! Tashan has the backing of a reputed production house, fantastic star cast who performs and looks scorching hot (especially Kareena Kapoor! Yes Bebo dons a two piece bikini in Tashan and we must say has looked stunning like never before! Her bikini shot is so far the best we’ve seen in Indian cinema!), has some great songs especially Chaliya, Dil Haara and Phalak Tak but all gets overshadowed by a totally absurd script making the film exceptionally mediocre and plain stupid!
We have to mention that Tashan’s outfits designed by Aki Narula are awesome and give every character the needed individuality.
Overall, Tashan disappoints you big time but you can afford to watch it once if you want to catch a glimpse of Saifu’s cute son Ibrahim for the very first time on screen and of course the gorgeous Kareena Kapoor! Her seductive dance movements in Chaliya (well sung by Sunidhi) are definitely worth a dekho!
