Anurag Kashyap’s Black Friday will finally see the light of day.
The film, finished over years ago, will be releasing in January or February 2007. The Supreme Court had given permission to the producers to release the film only after the TADA court pronounces all its verdicts on the accused in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case. The film is directed by Anurag Kashyap and stars Kay Kay Menon, Aditya Srivastava, Pavan Malhotra, Pratima Kazmi, Vijay Maurya and Gajraj Rao.
“Now that the verdict on the accused in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case is out, we are planning to release the film in January or February next year. The final date will be set Within a couple of days. At last, the audience will get the opportunity to watch my film on the big screen as they have already seen it through pirated DVDs,” quips Kashyap.
Following a petition by one of the accused in the bomb blasts case – Mushtaq Moosa Tarani, the Mumbai High Court had stayed the film’s release as the verdict in the case was not out. Tarani’s argument was that the release of the film would have an impact on the judgment of the case.
The stay on the film came into effect on 31 March, 2006 a day prior to the scheduled release of Black Friday. This in turn led to the market being flooded with pirated DVDs of the film, allegedly printed by staffers of a leading production house, which was involved in the making of the film.
Black Friday, made at a cost of Rs 45 million (Rs 4.5 crore), is based on a book by crime journalist S Hussain Zaidi. However, due to the delay in its release, the budget is expected to have shot over by nearly Rs 30 million (Rs 3 crore), inclusive of the debts incurred by co-producer Jhamu Sughand for the delay. The film has been co-produced by Mid-Day Multimedia Limited and Jhamu Sughand. The music for the film has been provided by Indian Ocean.
