The young music director of Kabul Express, Raghav Sachar, had his first brush with music when he learnt to play the harmonica at the age of four.
With each passing year, Sachar learnt to play a new musical instrument, and now at the age of 25, he has mastered 25 instruments, the latest addition to his repertoire being the Saxonet (a combination of the saxophone and the clarinet).
This is the one Sachar has used as the lead instrument in the song Kabul Fiza, that he has composed for the film. Thirteen other instruments that he has mastered also play in the other songs.
Although Sachar has performed at many shows at the national and international level and has cut two albums with HMV and Universal Music respectively, Kabul Express marks his entry into Bollywood. He couldn’t have asked for a better platform than a Yash Raj banner.
Kabul Express is not a typical romantic film like Yash Raj’s various other films, nor is it a very serious issue based film, as the title may suggest. Hence, YRF found it appropriate to compose a promotional song to hype it as a fun filled film. Sachar says, “The film was ready in May, but I was approached four months ago to compose the music. The brief given to me was, ‘We want one energetic, catchy, hummable song with a Sufi touch’.
The film Kabul Express does not have songs in it, but has an original soundtrack that is composed, arranged and performed by Raghav. What initially started as a requirement for a single song transformed into the release of a full fledged album. “The album does not have situational songs. I haven’t even seen the film. I made a conscious effort not to overuse Arabic and Sufi tunes and deliver something predictable,” says Sachar.
He has sung three songs in the film – ‘Kabul Fiza’ (picturised on John Abraham and Arshad Warsi), ‘Keh Raha Mera Dil’ and ‘Yeh Main Aaya Kahan Hoon’. Shubha Mudgal, Sunidhi Chauhan and Kay Kay have sung different versions of the Banjar song.
Sachar now wants to concentrate on commercial films that have a requirement of romantic music, which he identifies as his forte.
