The much-awaited period film by Ashutosh Gowarikar has been in some or the other controversy ever since it began its shooting in Jaipur. The latest trouble to hit the film is that a Jaipur court has issued a notice against Gowarikar for allegedly distorting the historical facts in the movie. Earlier, animal rights activists and a Rajput community had filed cases against them in the court.
The recent controversy has been sparked by another Rajput community which has asked Gowarikar not to distort facts about the history of Jodhabai.
According to popular misconception, Jodhabai is considered to be the wife of Akbar. But, she’s actually the daughter-in-law of Akbar married to his son Salim alias Jahangir. Narendra Singh Rajawat, the secretary of Rajput Sabha, said in his petition, “Jodhabai’s actual name was Jagat Gosain and she was the daughter-in-law of Mughal Emperor Akbar. You cannot make your own history and Ashutosh Gowarikar is making his own history. He is projecting Jodhabai, who is Akbar’s daughter-in-law, as his beloved and making a love story out of that. This is totally distorting historical facts.” The Rajput also condemned the portrayal of such twisted facts as this will become a movie portraying romance between Akbar and his daughter-in-law which is not acceptable in the Indian society.
Meanwhile, the court of additional chief judicial magistrate has sent notice to Gowarikar’s production company — Ashutosh Gowarikar Production Pvt Limited — for reply by December 6. So, it’s high time the film maker got his facts right before venturing into a period film without proper homework on it.
