RS Report: 53rd Fair One Filmfare Awards
Published by  Webmaster  at 02:40:34 am on February 24, 2008

Aamir Khan’s first film as director bagged the big gongs at the 53rd Fair One Filmfare Awards, but the actor was not present to accept them.

Taare Zameen Par beat of Chak De! India, Guru, Jab We Met and Om Shanti Om for the Best Film award. That was after Aamir Khan was announced as Best Director for the same film, coming ahead of veteran craftsman Mani Ratnam. Anurag Basu, Farah Khan, Imtiaz Ali and Shimit Amin were all disappointed. Prasoon Joshi won Best Lyrics for Maa, Amol Gupte for Best Story and Darsheel Safary was honored with the Critics award for Best Actor. That gave December 2007 release Taare Zameen Par a total of 5 Filmfare awards.

However, Darsheel Safary and Aamir Khan lost out to Shah Rukh Khan and Irrfan Khan for Best Actor In A Leading Role (Male) and Best Actor In A Supporting Role (Male) respectively. Shah Rukh bagged the coveted accolade for his superb performance in the sports flick Chak De! India and Irrfan for his magnanimous acting in Life In A… Metro.

As expected, Kareena Kapoor was given Best Actor In A Leading Role (Female) for her comedic scenes in Jab We Met. Konkona Sen Sharma, who was nominated twice in the Best Actor In A Supporting Role (Female) category, for Laaga Chunari Mein Daag and Life In A… Metro, winning it for the latter.

The big music award went to A R Rahman; his composition for Mani Ratnam’s Guru was Best Music. Hip and hop singer Shaan once again showed his prowess when it comes to playback singing, winning yet another Best Playback Singer (Male) for Jab Se Tere Naina from Saawariya. In the Best Playback Singer (Female) category, the competition was close, but in the end it was Shreya Ghosal… once again… for Barso Re from Guru.

The feel good factor awards had no surprises as Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone bagged Best Debut for Male and Female respectively. Deepika rubbed salt in fellow debutante Sonam Kapoor’s wounds a second time, when she also bagged Sony Head N Shoulders Fresh Face Of The Year Award. Sonam and her father had decided not to attend the event as they expected Deepika to get these awards.

Rishi Kapoor was given the Lifetime Achievement Award, Monty Sharma the R D Burman Award for his songs in Saawariya, and father-son Yash and Aditya Chopra got Power Awards. Tabu was named Critics’ Best Actress and Chak De! India Critics’ Best Film.

For a full list of the awards given, please scroll down to the end of the article.

The awards ceremony was held under tight security at Yashraj Studios but some of Bollywood’s big names failed to attend. Missing were the Bachchans, Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, Shahid Kapur. Hrithik Roshan, Govinda and Rani Mukherjee. But many of whom mattered were there… Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, Priyanka Chopra, Bipasha Basu, John Abraham, Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Akshay Kumar.

The show was co-anchored by Vidya Balan, Karan Johar, Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan. The latter two managed to create raves with their double act and had the audience in laughs galore. Himesh Reshammiya may have failed to win any award but he did belt out a few of his most noted tunes, while ever-reliable Akshay Kumar danced enigmatically. New kids on the block Neil Nitin Mukesh and Deepika Padukone also performed, so did Kareena Kapoor and Vivek Oberoi.

Awards were given out by Neil Nitin Mukesh, Twinkle Khanna, Priyanka Chopra, Dimple Kapadia, Nirupama Rao, Shaimak Davar, Bipasha Basu, John Abraham and Kunal Kapoor. Saif Ali Khan came on stage to give out the award to his girlfriend Kareena Kapoor while Preity Zinta awarded Aamir Khan, his being accepted by Prasoon Joshi. Rekha gave out the big award of the day, to Shah Rukh Khan for Chak De! India.

Saif Ali Khan ad Shah Rukh Khan awarded their own ‘Na-Real’ awards, recipient of one was Vidya Balan, for her look in Heyy Baby – The Na-Real Award For Wardrobe Malfunction.

The highlight of the evening had to be Rishi Kapoor being bestowed with the Lifetime Achievement award, an hour after his son got the Best Debutante Award. “Twenty percent of my reason for being an actor was that I could win a Filmfare. I am overwhelmed,” said a jubilant Ranbir. Addressing his mother Neetu Singh, Ranbir joked, “Mamma, I am bringing home a girl tonight.” There were rumors running around that a film, starring both Rishi and Ranbir, could be announced… but this wasn’t to be.

The awards will be shown on TV on March 2nd on Sony.

  17. To all you SRK haters.

Why do you like Aamir better. The guy just gives shit about awards. He doesn’t bother whether you like him or not. He just doesn’t care. Can someone tell me why he doesn’t attend any award functions. And if he actually thinks that the awards are not fair, then why the hell did he send his first directorial effort to awardconsiderations. Why doesn’t he sue all award-agencies for sharing their love to his work. The man is sick! (with due respect).

On the other hand you have SRK. The guy tries to entertain everyone. He is everywhere for you guys, on awards, sports, tv, ads, weddings and so on….No wonder everyone from the Ghai’s, Chopra’s, Johar’s, Roshan’s, Farah Khan, Sajid Khan, Bansali (at one time) and others love to work with him.

Who does Amir have? Or for the matter of fact which ace-director does Akshey kumar, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Hritik or any other actor have? NONE….

May the Bollywood Baadshah King Shahrukh Khan rule the industri for a long time to come.

    Bante

Even though i think Amir is a better actor than SRK.

  18. Bante on February 25th, 2008 at 12:21 am
  19. Aamir Khan is definitely a better actor than Shah Rukh Khan. However, the latter is loved by the masses as he entertains us beyond just films. It is extremely disappointing that Aamir did not attend a ceremony where his film won 5 awards. The public would have liked to hear from him and seen him accept what are arguably the most prestigious awards.

  27. Mr. Sha,

Be a man and accept that Shahrukh is nothing but a media dalal…as a viewer Taare Jamin Par is anytime better than Chake De..We all know that Shakhrukh manipulates these awards by using Sam Dam Dand Bhed….you won’t understand this Sha.

  29. king khan rules yet again and he prove that no new kid or star kid can come close to him. he accepts awards with open arms and warmth just like it is first award and one thing he always never forgets where he came from he knows that this stardom will not last forever. i think srk deserves the award but darsheel did not. amir khan is definitely in the wrong profession awards should not be given to him if he does attend.he wanted darsheel to get award because he has never got one. oso should have got a award.

  30. ninjo on February 25th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
  31. Guys Dilip Saab won 8 best actor and is leading most win and King Khan is nr2 with 6 best actor(his 7th came in shape of Chak de)one more and he will be the best actor in india with dilip saab officially! We already know that he is the biggest actor ever in india!

by the way srk won 9 filmfare awards

if aamir and so was good at acting then how come they hardly win awards
once in a while they win awards and thats because they are not good enough for the awards
their acting have to be great and their acting is just ok

  35. KING KHAN:

AND THE TRUTH IS THAT: FILMFARE AWARDS OR THE SHARUKH-YASH CHOPRA AWARDS ( HOW ITS CALLED NOW )= ARE THE BIG JOKER AWARDS !! YOU DO NOT KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THE HINDI FILM INDUSTRY !!

  36. HAROLD on February 26th, 2008 at 7:49 am
  37. Its really a waste of time to discuss the Filmfare awards as we all know that they are a joke !! since the time I am following them (early 1990s to present) they have never really been fair except a few categories, actually they never even get the nominations right in all major categories most of the time, may be they were fair earlier (1950s, 60s,70s) but now nobody takes it seriously(neither the public nor the film fraternity) it has lost its credibility long time back. Most ppl watch it for fun and cheer when their favorites wins and rubbishes them as crap or not that important when they lose, becoz nither the public nor the film ppl honor or respect them as the Oscars are done in Hollywood and there is the issue that how come when its decided partially decided by public votes and partially by the jury neither is known, that is never the number of votes received by the winner is disclosed nor the jury is known to the general public, the jury can only remain accountable when it is known to the public. Another thing is that if I am not mistaken the votes are not certified or audited like the Oscars are by the renowned firm PricewaterhouseCoopers firm maybe becoz their number of votes(only 1,311 votes) are obviously much less than Filmfare but still there is hardly anything which suggest the Filmfare award are fair and transparent !!!!!!!

  39. To Harold! Please stick to the racist site you visit(Ibos)cause what ever you say i wont accept it cause you and rezwaan was the one advised me to that site!some months back, when we were talking about All-time box office!Tell me single year they were not fair in best actor?the only unfair they did this year is for Rahman for guru!V-S,S-E-L and pritam were way better this year!

  40. King Khan on February 28th, 2008 at 1:55 am
  41. KING KHAN: Look in the mirror and you wille see the biggest racist commenting on Radio Sargam !!!
I’ve been shocked at the Bollywood film awards this year to see that a 45 minute performance by this Shah Rukh Khan off Indian patriotism and hockey girls has been given filmfare and actor awards over a solo, title role, career defining performance by Abhishek Bachchan.

  42. HAROLD on February 28th, 2008 at 8:43 am
  43. FILMFARE AWARDS ARE A FRAUD!!!

anywone that knows how these awards should know that these are the most corrupt awards in india. No wonder actors like aamir khan boycotts awards

There was a time in the 70s and 80s were the filmfare awards were respected and awards giving on merit. Actors like Naserudin Shah won best actor award 1983, Even Anupum Kher won best actor in 1984. In the 70s actors like Sanjeev Kumar won.

Today they have just turned corrupt and have become popular choices and and nothing else.

  44. Amjad on February 28th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
  45. The true film awards in india are the NATIONAL AWARDS.

Which are giving on merit and acting ability.

    Shahrukh Khan has won NONE!!

  47. What makes me laugh is when people call SRK..KING KHAN??

    KING???

I dont think KINGS go to weddings and dance for money. Better word should be KUNJAR.

how cheap is that…dancing at weddings for money!!! This is an insult to the great stars of the past

I admire AAMIR KHAN who would never do this…

AAMIR KHAN is the real KING KHAN as far as i am concerned.

Bottom line if you got money you can buy SRK to dance at your wedding.

KUNJAR KHAN is the best name to befit someone who is willing to do this..

  50. HAROLD on February 28th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
  51. Harold only idiots on this forum or teenagers that dont know anything about the history of filmfare awards will go on about SRK being the best.

I was looking through the filmfare winners list from 1980 to 1986..

    1980 Anol Palekar (who?)
    1981 Naseerudin Shah
    1982 Naseerudin Shah
    1982 Dilip Kumar
    1984 Naseerudin Shah
    1985 Anupum kher
    1986 Kamal Hassan.

This was the era when Amitabh Bachcan was the greatest EVER star, in popularity there was noone to compare to him. If they were popular awards he would have won ALL THE AWARDS during this time.

todays generation does not understand this and will keep talking of SRK being great….SRK is only winning because the awards are CHEAP and CORRUPT!

  52. Amjad on February 28th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
  53. aamir khan deserves to win for sure!! So what if he doesnt show up his work should be awarded!! for SUREE!!

  55. Folks,

53rd Filmfare awards was the most cheap and vulgar show. Its time for Filmfare committee to think about more cultural persons as Mater of cereony and presenter as this awards os one of the prestigious.
No more Shahrukh & saif with their bloody cheap vulgarity and critics on the stage.
Why there is just Shahrukh lobby in working. what the hell other leading personalities doing their shuting their mouth. Eventhough Oscar presenter trioes to make fun but within limit and intelligent critics.
This shows that Bollywood still lagging far behind.
Any one, this is open challenge. feel free to write your comment back.

  56. kash on March 3rd, 2008 at 6:04 am
  57. If aamir Khan does not expect awards, he should not be nominated or awarded for any awards at all. Filmfare, you should not have given his film or him an award, even if his film was good. No awards should be given to him at all. Darsheel yes but not him.

  63. SRK ROCKS

  64. kusum on March 4th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
  65. I guess, in the end it doesnt matter. These awards are about who has the power, rather than who is a better actor. SRK is not versatile at all. he has only one style of acting, but he has charisma, and that has led him to be a superstar whether we like it or not. Amitabh, Hrithik, Aamir are far more versatile and dignified.

I am not that disappointed with the awards as I am disappointed with SRK’s arrogance while hosting. He has no regard or respect for others. But we all need to remember that an arrogant person always falls in the end, and that is what will happen to him if he doesnt come back to earth and humble himself.

  66. mona on March 4th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
  67. Also, the biggest shame for SRK is that even at this age, he feels constantly threatened by a much older actor Amitabh who is almost 65.

  68. mona on March 4th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
  69. Amjad!

The list that you showed from 1980 to 1986 only proves that in these years Amitabh Bachchan had no great performance to show, while on other hand Shah Rukh Khan had great performance every year.

While look at Awards Shah Rukh Khan Won as Best Actor in Filmfare Chak De! India, Swades, Devdas, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Dil To Pagal Hai, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Baazigar were fully deserving and it is landmark performances of Indian Cinema History.

For your kind information Anjaam was Below Average not Flop, Duplicate was Below Average not Flop, Ram Jaane was Above Average not Flop and Baadshah was Average not Flop. Yeh Lamhe Judaai Ke is not Shah Ruhh Khan Movie. By using posters of an actor doesn’t mean that it is His Movie. If we go by that Logic Bandhan is Amitabh Bachchan Movie because his posters were used in the movie.

  89. HAROLD!

Awards doesn’t prove that it is good performance. Saif Ali Khan Won National Award for Hum Tum, does it mean that it was great performance. JURMANA, SATTE PE SATTA, BE-MISAL AND DESH PREMME were never Silver Jubliees they were Flops which were removed after 2 or 3 weeks. Sisila is a Classic for Amitabh Bachchan Fanatics. For Ram Jaane Shah Rukh Khan Won Best Actor, so Aks Critic Best Actor doesn’t make a difference.

  91. What Matters is here:-

    CHAK DE! INDIA
“Shah Rukh Khan is the soul of CHAK DE! INDIA. What you see on screen would be half of what it is without this matchless actor. He makes you feel what you are supposed to feel. A performance that’s sure to go down as one of his finest works so far.”

    SWADES
“Shah Rukh Khan is extremely likeable. He stands firm on his feet in dramatic sequences, confirming yet again that he’s not merely a super-star, but a super actor as well.”

    DEVDAS
“Shah Rukh Khan is mindblowing as Devdas. He plays his character with such finesse and aplomb that it is sheer delight to watch him. He evokes the right kind of emotions in the viewers’ hearts, never once going overboard. He looks splendid and mesmerises the audience with his acting in many scenes. As a man madly in love, he proves that there could have been no better choice than him for the role.”

    DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE
“Shah Rukh Khan does a wonderful job, in both his dancing and his acting.”

    DARR
“To say that Shah Rukh Khan stole the movie would be an understatement. He is phenomenal in the movie. His role of a passionate lover obsessed with Kiran who would stoop to conquer and keeps having bouts of self-pity is a tremendous effort. Starting from the stuttering uttering of I love you K-K-Ki-Kiran , to the sulking nature in presence of others, to the fire in the eyes when anybody touches Kiran, the youngster has given a mindblowing performance.”

DON – THE CHASE BEGINS AGAIN
“Shah Rukh Khan’s performance in the film is expectedly outstanding. It is one of the most stylish performance of his entire career. As Don he is ruthless and cunning and as Vijay his dialogue delivery and comic timing are worth applauding. Hats off to him for playing the Don and Vijay effortlessly. It would not be wrong to say that Don could not be Don without Shah Rukh Khan.”

    MOHABBATEIN
“Shah Rukh Khan is outstanding as Raj Aryan. The tension-filled scenes with Amitabh and then the light ones with the boys prove that he is an actor with an infinite range. The sequence in the climax, when he surrenders to Amitabh’s wishes to safeguard the interests of the three boys, is applaud-worthy.”

    VEER – ZAARA
“VEER-ZAARA is another feather in Shah Rukh Khan’s well decorated cap. The actor enacts the challenging role with amazing ease, putting his best foot forward and emerging trumps. It would indeed be difficult to imagine any other actor essaying the two diverse parts. Simply unforgettable!”

    KAL HO NAA HO
“One can’t imagine KAL HO NAA HO without Shah Rukh Khan. The actor delivers yet another bravura performance that he can be proud of, when he looks back in life. The role gives him immense scope to exhibit a gamut of emotions and the actor carries not just his role, but the entire film on his firm shoulders.”

    KABHI HAAN KABHI NAA
“Shah Rukh Khan gives a wonderful performance; his sense of comedic timing is perfect in each scene. Most of the film, barring the romance scenes, requires him to be comedic and his talent is evident there.”

    Om Shanti Om
“Shah Rukh Khan has given a superlative performance and once again shows why he is called Baadshah of bollywood. He is par excellence and entertains the audience from the word go. He does a superb job in his double role and carries the whole film on his shoulders. He is soul of the film and you can see him doing the things in a very natural and confident way. His portrayal of eccentricity as a super star is just fabulous.”

    PARDES
“Shah Rukh Khan has given a flawless performance. His acting as Arjun is subtle yet very powerful.”

    BAAZIGAR
“The biggest strength of the movie is Shah Rukh Khan’s superlative performance. It really raises the bar of the movie. BAAZIGAR also witnesses the rising of a new star in the form of Shah Rukh Khan who has the power to carry a film solely on his shoulders.”

    KABHI KHUSHI KABHIE GHAM
“Shah Rukh Khan sparkles yet again. His character is such, you can’t help but fall in love with this selfless man. And the actor performs it with amazing poise, class, honesty and maturity. His re-union with his mother and the father subsequently will prompt people to shed bucket-full of tears.”

    CHALTE CHALTE
“CHALTE CHALTE clearly belongs to Shah Rukh Khan, an actor par excellence. One actually runs out of adjectives and personifications if asked to describe this performance by the actor. Clearly his most natural and likeable performance since DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAYENGE, Shah Rukh Khan surrenders himself completely to the script and delivers a performance that is bound to be a big hit with one and all.”

    ASOKA
“Shah Rukh Khan essays his part with enthusiasm. It won’t be wrong to state that this is amongst his finest performances.”

    PAHELI
“If you ever had an iota of doubt about Shah Rukh Khan’s versatility, it would evaporate the moment you watch PAHELI. This is amongst Shah Rukh Khan’s most accomplished performances ever. He is fabulous as the ghost and equally convincing as the bewildered husband.”

    JOSH
“Shah Rukh Khan excels as Max. He looks the character and performs it with utmost sincerity. This is undoubtedly one of the best performances of his career.”

    KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA
“In KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA, the actors get a chance to shine and no one shines brighter than Shah Rukh Khan. Let’s just state one thing here: This is Shah Rukh Khan’s finest work after DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE. His sequences with Preity specifically, when the couple has their spats, or in the climax, when he just stares at Rani from inside the train, proves that he’s undoubtedly the best in the business. The ferocity with which he delivers his lines and the restless energy he imparts to his character electrifies every scene that he’s in.”

  95. Shahrukh Khan: Popular, most selling product in market (doesn’t
mean the best product in market), has skills
in public relations. Average actor, most consider him best because
of his immensity in some kind of acting, a lot of people consider him
the worst because of same kind of acting intensity in every act which
is not suitable. Never Evolved as a good actor, takes any role that
would get success commercially, never want to make difference.

Amitab Bachhan: Very versatile, one of the best actors in bollywood.
One of the most accomplished actor. Very diplomatic and wise in
public. Got mad skills in acting. Never evolved as an actor, takes any
role without studying, doesn’t have one’s own quality assurance
    check.

Aamir Khan: Very versatile. Great talent in acting. Very logical and
intellectually curious to pursue roles in apt manners. Has evolved as
an actor who seeks different and new ways to make difference.
Social skills are average, and doesn’t care. However, as an actor
second to none. (Hritik Roshan might prove this wrong, hasn’t done it
    yet)

Hassan and other actors from the country are not included
