Naseeruddin Shah feels there’s very little hope for the theatre scene in India
MUMBAI: Talk about Indian theatre and his is one the first names that will cross your mind. But Naseeruddin Shah himself has no qualms admitting that the theatre scene is unlikely to improve.
“The way I see it, theatre in India will continue to be the way it with relative success. It’s not going to get any better. In fact, we are grateful that it is alive as an art form and there are people like me who love it enough,” said Naseer, who is a Padma Bhushan and three-time National Award winner.
Theatre in India has been going through a decline with several leading theatre groups complaining about dwindling funds and, in some cases, lack of audience. And Naseer’s forecast sounds grim. “I don’t agree with the theory there’s a renaissance waiting to happen in theatre. Some years from now it would largely become an alternative art form vis-à-vis the popular and mass media.” he said.
