MUMBAI: Think Bollywood mothers and you think about the devis of self-denial —ill-fated, woebegone, delighting in masochism right from Leela Chitnis, Durga Khote, Sulochna to Nirupa Roy. In fact, the dialogue ‘Mere paas maa hai’ in Deewar best endorsed brand Maa!
But with the reshuffle in societal dynamics, the filmi maa has unwittingly metamorphosed into mom. Draped in designer yards and even squeezing into jeans (Jaya Bachchan in Kal Ho Naa Ho, Dimple Kapadia in Pyaar Mein Twist), the new age film mum is not only unabashedly romantic (Hema Malini in Baghban) but also a confidante to her daughter who’s fallen in love (Reema Lagoo in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai).
