Theatre person Makrand Deshpande is known for his on-screen and off-screen histrionics. And between his antics he does manage to create something ‘out of the box’ for his audiences.
This year is particularly special for him because he has two films — ‘Shah Rukh Bola Tu Khoobsoorat Hai’ and ‘Dream Man’ lined up for release.
He will also be judging ‘Hass Ley India Comedy Gang War Contest’ (Bindass)—a competition between participants on gags and stand-up comedy with Shekhar Suman.
Talking about why he took up the TV show Makrand says, “I am keen on working with youngsters. They are sources of untapped talent. Being at an impressionable age, they are often misguided. Hence, I look forward to judging them.”
Expressing his views on how comedy should be executed, he adds, “Comedy is the most difficult Rasa (emotion). It needs to be well-rehearsed but should look impromptu.
A performer should be fearless and uninhibited with humour. He should be able to laugh at himself; only then will he be able to make the world laugh with him. It should be about how he makes the situation look funny without him looking funny.”
Quiz him on what he will particularly remember as a judge and he says, “We should be aliens to each other. Otherwise, we may develop a mutual fondness.”
Makrand had not so long ago done a cameo role in ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’. He had also appeared in one of the episodes of ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge’ as a celebrity judge.
Ask him if he is keen to get back to TV and he replies, “I am eager to work on TV and am open to doing all kinds of shows but not for long-running commitments. My passion is theatre. I don’t get the time to do anything else. I do films because it keeps my kitchen running and TV runs my car.”
