AMERICAN
DESI BECOMES TOP GROSSER!
The
hit US movies becomes a hit UK movie too.
Following
its successful North American release last spring,
the Asian-American comedy "American Desi"
has enjoyed a solid opening in the United Kingdom
becoming one of the top-grossing limited-release
films in that market since debuting two weeks
ago.
Distributed
by Eros International, the romantic comedy opened
on the weekend of September 28th with a gross
of $80,400 from only 27 theatres. "American
Desi" showed remarkable staying power by
collecting another $80,600 from the same number
of theatres in its second weekend boosting its
ten-day total to $196,000.
Several
multiplexes have reported that "American
Desi" was their second biggest picture
on the weekend of September 28th trailing only
Steven Spielberg's "A.I." which was
the nation's number one film during that period.
Many theatres playing "American Desi"
enjoyed an increase in sales on the second weekend
indicating that word-of-mouth has been excellent.
Moviegoers in their teens and twenties made
up the largest age group while females slightly
outnumbered males. With a strong and durable
start, "American Desi" is expected
to perform very well in the United Kingdom throughout
the fall season.
Due
to this initial success, "American Desi"
has now been playing at the prestigious Warner
Village West End theatre in Central London on
Friday, October 12th. Later this year, the hit
comedy will be released across India and other
parts of the world.
Marking
the feature debut of writer/director Piyush
Dinker Pandya, "American Desi" is
an independently produced comedy about a young
Asian-American man, out of touch with his heritage,
who is forced to come to terms with his culture
in order to win the girl of his dreams, who
happens to be Indian.
The
film also marks the first English-language movie
ever released by Eros International which is
the world's leading distributor of Bollywood
films. "American Desi" has also won
three nominations (picture, actor, and actress)
for next month's annual Ammy Awards which recognise
excellence in Asian and Asian-American cinema.
Only "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon"
has collected more nominations this year with
four.
