GRACIE
SINGH
Amaanat Star Goes Bollywood
You
will surly have seen this girl on TV, Gracie
Singh made her debut on a TV serial called Amaanat,
a serial about 7 sisters and their father. Now
the actress makes her debut on the big screen
opposite Aamir Khan in Lagaan.
The name Gracie Singh sounds different, who
chose it?
My Auntie chose this name, it's a western name
that has a Punjabi twist to it.
Did
you ever imagine being in Bollywood films?
It is a natural progression for television stars
to go into movies, but to me that thought never
occurred. I was only doing one television serial.
But it was my secretary that asked me to go
for a screen test. It was a screen test for
a BR Chopra serial. I had to show my dance skills.
It was here where I was introduced to Ashutosh
Gowrakiar.
And
what about Lagaan?
Well I was taken into this office, I had no
idea whose office it was, and then someone told
me it was Aamir Khan's. Ashutosh told me that
they were doing a period film with Aamir Khan.
He gave me a scene to read. A few days later
I got a call for another screen test. In this
screen test they tried different costumes on
me, changed my make-up, and asked me to perform
a dance sequence. A few days later I was called
again and was told that they were 80% certain
on hiring me, but I had to be tested again,
to see if I would match Aamir.
And
that is where you met Aamir?
Yes! I was nervous wreck. I didn't know he was
going to come. I thought this all was a joke.
But Aamir was there, reading out from the script!
I couldn't believe it. That was the biggest
date of my life.
How
was Aamir like then?
He was very helpful and down-to-earth. He was
not like a 'star'. I really enjoyed doing that
scene.
And then you were offered the role?
Not then, no, a few days later. I couldn't believe
it. I was in a daze. I didn't know what was
happening with my life. For the next few months
I was totally dazed and confused.
What about the experience of working with Aamir?
Aamir is besotted with the finer details. It
will take us newcomers a while to get that degree.
Aamir is a perfectionist. He really brings his
character to life. Even if the director says
its ok, he still has to do another take. Just
to satisfy himself. It was very inspiring to
work with. I really admire his work,
Did
you find the song and dance scenes hard?
No! I enjoyed them! I like dancing. So to it
on here was like a dream come true. I started
proper training in Classical dance only after
the film.
Will
you now return to Amaanat and television?
I don't think I can do that now. It's totally
different now for me. It is difficult to return
after Lagaan.
Have you been signed for any new films?
I have had offers, but I haven't signed anything!
I will only do that after the release of Lagaan.
Lets wait and see how my role is appreciated!
