IIFA AWARDS 2002: THE NOMINEES
Who has been shortlisted for what

The nominations for the third annual IIFA Awards to be held in Malaysia have now been released. The nominations were derived from the Voting Weekend held in February, when professionals from the film industry came in to cast their vote on thirteen popular and fourteen Technical awards. These votes were then collated and summarized by PricewaterhouseCoopers, the auditors for the Electrolux Kelvinator IIFA awards.

These nominations for the Popular Awards will now be open for public voting. The Electrolux Kelvinator IIFA Awards ceremony will be held on April 6, 2002 and will be broadcast live all over the world via Sony Entertainment Television. The Electrolux Kelvinator IIFA Awards were launched three years ago at the Millennium Dome UK, as a salutation to the world's largest film industry. The Awards are celebrated annually with an event that is breathtaking, slick and on par with the best in the world.

The Electrolux Kelvinator IIFA Awards are a grand international event held at different international locations every year, beginning with the UK in its inaugural year at the Millennium Dome, the Sun City, South Africa, last year and now at the picturesque Genting Highlands, Malaysia. This is in keeping with the philosophy of partnering host countries that have shown a marked interest in the following of Indian Cinema and have a sizable resident Indian population.

Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, chief patron of IIFA said, "These awards are an important step in globalizing Indian cinema. By going to new markets each year, we are able to showcase our talent and honour our best performances, while at the same time help build a strong bridge between India and the world. At the recent press conference in Genting Highlands, Malaysia, I was pleasantly surprised by the huge support and following that Indian cinema had in that country. It was also a privilege to accept the invitation from the Honourable Minister of Tourism, Government of Malaysia, to bring the awards to his country.''

Electrolux Kelvinator, the Naming and Title sponsor of the IIFA Awards for India, has identified it as the platform that Indians across the globe are looking forward to. "We at Electrolux Kelvinator are proud to be associated with the IIFA for the third consecutive year. As in the previous years, we are sure that the Electrolux Kelvinator IIFA Awards will showcase the best of talent and entertainment and are looking forward to the experience.'' said Mr. Anand Bhardwaj Executive Vice President, Marketing & Marketing services.

On April 5, 2002, IIFA will premier the Bollywood movie Aankhen starring Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, Arjun Rampal, Bipasha Basu and Sushmita Sen. Aankhen, produced by Gaurang Doshi and directed by Vipul Shah is a fresh attempt to mix adventure with emotion and more importantly, the heart. The cast describes Aankhen as Untold, Unseen and Unique.

At the press conference, the producers of Aankhen launched the Aankhen Game, a unique interactive presentation that extends the entertainment value of the film through participation of the audiences. ``Aankhen is an unconventional blend of excitement and fast paced entertainment - and the game will serve to enhance this, by interacting with the audiences.'' said Mr. Gaurang Doshi, Producer of Aankhen. The Aankhen game as CDROMs will be available across retail outlets in India.

Part of the excitement that the Awards will generate is the IIFA Weekend that goes across April 4 to the April 6. This weekend will comprise the IIFA Music release, the IIFA World Premiere and finally the IIFA Awards. For that grand evening on April 6, Malaysian Airlines will specially fly 350 members of the film industry, including film stars, directors, music directors and other celebrities to Genting Highlands Resorts.
