SPECIAL REPORT: FILMFARE AWARDS 2006

Aishwarya, looking beautiful

The Filmfare Awards have a reputation for being the premiere Bollywood awards ceremony. After this year’s event, however, organisers actually succeeded in turning the previously successful a-list ceremony into a c-grade shambles!

The foundation of every awards ceremony is always the hosts. Hiring engaging and witty presenters to talk the audience through the show is essential. Unfortunately the Filmfare Awards failed here… big time! The audience were tortured with seriously unfunny hosts including Javed Jaffrey, Cyrus Broacha and Pooja Batra.

Forget starting the show with a bang, these unpopular ‘celebrities’ barely managed a whimper. If Cyrus Broacha really thought his mother comedy act was funny, or Javed thought his musician character would raise a smile or two, then the hopes of both men were soon dashed when the audience looked towards them with bored and somewhat confused expressions. These are actors and actresses we are talking about in the audience, but even they could not pretend to enjoy the jokes. Painfully bad!

Oh well, if the hosts are poor, at least the performances could help raise spirits, right? Well, not really! The first part of the dull ceremony featured forgettable and amateur performances by the likes of Emraan Hashmi, Neha Dhupia and Shamita Shetty. We’re hardly talking about the crème of the crop here! Thankfully Lara Dutta and Abhishek Bachchan helped improve the situation somewhat. Aishwarya went one level further by looking gorgeous and dancing a treat.

However the night will be remembered because of someone else. The queen made her comeback! Madhuri Dixit owned the stage during her performance. Looking beautiful, with the same dazzling smile that won her the hearts of millions, Madhuri epitomized the grace, beauty and charm that we’ve missed ever since her exit from Bollywood.

In the audience, the big stars were all missing. Amitabh Bachchan, Rani Mukherjee, Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai and Preity Zinta were amongst the small group of people representing the big league. But the event was overall very badly attended.
