BOLLYWOOD MUSIC AWARDS 2002! The icing on the cake was Padmabhushan Yesudas, who received the coveted "Lifetime Achievement Award". Over 2500 fans turned up and were packed to the rafters at the Zee Bollywood Music Awards, which mirror the choice of countless fans living outside India. Says Kamal Dandona, Chairman of the event. "These awards were instituted with a vision that the choice of fans is the choice that must prevail." Bollywood is the great unifier. True to this, the audience comprised Indians as well as Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, people of Indian origin from the Caribbean and smattering of Westerners. The number of celebrities and performers present struck Naresh Sahni, a New Yorker who attended the show, at the occasion. "This is the only show which brings so many artists from Bollywood together. Entertaining shows like this act as a binding force between people and Sonu Nigam's performance was simply out of the world and needless to say, all performers put up a dazzling show," he added. Fans across the South Asian diaspora make nominations for the awards, with ballot forms available in ethnic dailies, on websites and fliers placed in grocery stores. The big winners of the evening were Sonu Nigam and Kavita Krishnamurthy. The award for the best music director and best song of the year went to Ismail Darbar for his blockbuster Devdas while Shreya Ghosal won the best debut for Devdas. The best debut-music director award went to Rahul Sharma for Mujhse Dosti Karoge soundtrack.
